Planetbeing, MuscleNerd, and P0sixninja Help Pod2g With A5 Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has announced that Planetbeing, MuscleNerd, and P0sixninja have joined his effort to release an untethered jailbreak of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2.

@planetbeing, the legendary hacker behind iPhone Linux and lot of jailbreaks has joined the A5 research! The famous @MuscleNerd, the leader of the iPhone Dev Team, who did a lot of tests for Corona and whom integrated it and made it simple in redsn0w is willing to help also. And last, but not least @p0sixninja, the leader of the Chronic Dev Team, and my partner for years on iPhone security research has started to code and fuzz the Apple sandbox.

We now have a dream team to find a path for a public release of the A5 jailbreak. Cross your fingers.

Yesterday, pod2g posted a FAQ on why the A5 jailbreak had not been released yet. The key reason being that the exploit used to inject the untethering files to the 4S relies on having a developer account.

With the help of planetbeing, MuscleNerd, and p0sixninja, pod2g is hoping to find a distributable exploit to remount the system partition read/write and to set Corona files at the correct places.

Pod2g Posts FAQ on iPhone 4S and iPad 2 Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has posted on his blog to answer some questions about the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 untethered jailbreak.

How could pod2g have an untethered 4S and dev teams still haven't released tools to achieve this at home ?
The exploit I used to inject the untethering files to the 4S relies on having a developer account, and can't be released publicly. It's the same reason why @MuscleNerd has an iPad 2 tethered jailbreak but couldn't distribute it. So, we need to find a distributable exploit to remount the system partition read/write and to set Corona files at the correct places.

Why A4 version of Corona was easier to release ?
Because a tethered jailbreak is a good way to install Corona!

Why don't you do a tethered jailbreak then ?
A tethered jailbreak also relies on an exploitable vulnerability that we still haven't found yet !

Earlier this week, pod2g posted that he had made good progress on the jailbreak for A5 devices and said with some luck we could expect a release in a week.

Pod2g Makes Progress With A5 Jailbreak, Release Could Come in a Week!

Pod2g has just tweeted some interesting information regarding the A5 jailbreak. Apparently, pod2g has made good progress on the jailbreak for A5 devices and claims that if lucky, we could expect it in a week!

I made a step today for the A5. With some luck we could expect a release in a week.

Keep in mind though, there are still some roadblocks ahead and the ETA can always get pushed back. In the meantime, you can jailbreak any pre-A5 device on 5.0.1 using our jailbreak tutorial page located here.

We will keep you updated on the A5 jailbreak as well. You can follow us on @limerain_com, Facebook page , RSS.

Pod2g Resolves Cache Troubles With the iPhone 4S Untethered Jailbreak

Pod2g has resolved the cache troubles with the iPhone 4S untethered jailbreak, according to a new progress update.

---
OK, figured it out, the A5 cache is not a problem anymore. I sorted it out by doing the untether in a single thread and by flushing all the dcache then all the icache in a row at a strategical point of the process. It took me like a hundred of tests to find the key. Hard for the nerves.

For the tech guys, here is a link explaining issues related to self modifying code ( or code patching ) on the ARM platform : http://blogs.arm.com/software-enablemen ... ying-code/

Another news : I discussed with @saurik today about the launchd boot process, and he's found one missing piece of the puzzle I needed to have a perfectly stable jailbreak. He's definitly one of the best iOS gurus out there. Thank you saurik!

Things are definitely progressing. We'll let you know when we have more news via @limerain_com, Facebook page , and RSS.

Update on the Untethered Jailbreak for the iPhone 4S

Pod2g has issued an update on the progress of the untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4S.

For those who haven't been tracking his progress, last week pod2g successfully untethered the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPod 4G, iPod 3G, iPad 1, and Apple TV 2 (4.4.3). He has now turned his attention to the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2.

Here are the news of the 4S week-end. The untether fails right now because I'm having processor cache issues. I'm close, but I can't figure out what happens. It certainly has something to do with the Cortex-A9 cache management.

I could sort it out quick, it's a matter of chance. I'll report you my progress tomorrow.

As usual we will keep you up to date with the latest. You can follow Us via @limerain_com, Facebook page , or RSS.

Thieves Steal $60,000 in iPads From Best Buy in 60 Seconds

It took thieves just 60 seconds to steal $60,000 worth of iPads from Best Buy earlier today, reports naplesnews.

Lee Sheriff's Office deputies responded to an alarm activation at Best Buy located in Coconut Point, 8000 Mediterranean Drive, Estero, just before 5 a.m. They found the rear door pried open and merchandise on the ground.

The store's manager said an initial check showed a cage door pried open and 60 to 90 Apple iPads missing. The manager estimates the value to be about $60,000.00, according to reports.

The three men broke into the store by prying open the back door. Dressed in dark clothing with their heads covered and wearing gloves, they quickly searched for the iPads, loaded them into a bin and left before police arrived.

iPad 2 runs webOS twice as fast as the TouchPad, internal HP testing revealed

Hewlett-Packard engineers did dare pull unthinkable: They hacked iPad to install webOS only to find out Apple’s hardware runs their mobile operating system more than twice as fast compared to their own TouchPad hardware, a source “close to the subject” told The Next Web. The finding had devastating effects on the team’s morale:

The hardware reportedly stopped the team from innovating beyond certain points because it was slow and imposed constraints, which was highlighted when webOS was loaded on to Apple’s iPad device and found to run the platform significantly faster than the device for which it was originally developed.
It should be pointed out that webOS runs on Qualcomm ARM chips while iPad 2 runs on Samsung silicon. This little nugget is even more revealing:

With a focus on web technologies, webOS could be deployed in the iPad’s Mobile Safari browser as a web-app; this produced similar results, with it running many times faster in the browser than it did on the TouchPad.
In fact, the webOS team wanted HP’s TouchPad and Pre hardware “gone” even before the products hit the marketplace according to TNW. With a hardware refresh a year off and similar issues with the Pre phones, this could have contributed to the decision to shutter the webOS and perhaps license it out to other companies (with better hardware).

In a separate report, TNW details how the news was broken to the webOS group within HP.

Almost everyone at HP found out about the death of the TouchPad and Pre hardware as the public did, in the press release. Only the top executives knew anything about this decision and even senior staff as high as Ari Jaaksi, the Vice President of webOS software, didn’t know about the shuttering of hardware before it happened. After the press release came out, there was a company wide meeting filled with a bunch of ‘corporate speak’, in which staff were told that they were going to be in limbo for 3-4 weeks.

It’s worth mentioning Hewlett and Packard were Jobs’ heroes growing up. It is also worth recalling that the company saw absolutely no value in Wozniak’s original personal computer design and laughed him off. The Woz then went on to create the original Apple I, he founded a company with Steve Jobs that put personal computing on the map, the same market Hewlett-Packard would spectacularly exit 34 years later.
The rest, as they say, is history.

Step Three
Select your iDevice from the list of devices on the left

Step Four
Hold down the Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) key and click the Restore button.

Step Five
Select the iOS 4.3.3 ipsw from the Pwnage folder on your desktop and click Open.

Step Six
Once your iDevice is running iOS 4.3.3, press to launch Safari from your desktop.

Step Seven
Navigate to http://www.jailbreakme.com and press the Free button.

Step Eight
Press the Install button.

Step Nine
Safari will now close and Cydia will download and install.

Step Ten
Press to launch Cydia and enjoy your jailbroken iDevice!

iPad 2 Jailbreak Gets Leaked Again

Another person has shamelessly leaked Comex's unfinished jailbreak of the iPad 2. This time its Ryan Vanniekerk who managed to find the files after Comex had moved them to a different location on his server.

Since these files are unfinished, buggy, and stolen from Comex we had not planned to publish the story; however, other iPhone related sites have been posting about Vanniekerk's how to. We've been told that these beta jailbreaks could do permanent damage to your device and thus we strongly recommend users do not attempt this jailbreak and wait for the official release which is expected soon.

As we noted earlier you can follow us on Twitter and Facebook for updates using the links at the bottom of the page.

JailbreakMe.com Is Being Updated With iPad 2 Jailbreak?

JailbreakMe.com is now showing a 'We'll be back soon.' sticky note suggesting that the site may be undergoing updates before the release of the iPad 2 jailbreak.

Apple typically posts the exact same sticky note when it takes down the Apple Store ahead of new releases.

Earlier today a leaked conversation between Comex and MultiMediaWill indicated that the jailbreak was coming today.

We'll let you know as soon as it is released. You can follow us on Twitter or Facebook using the links at the bottom of the page.

Official iPad 2 Jailbreak to Be Released By Tomorrow?

A screenshot of an email conversation between Comex and Will Sayer after the iPad 2 jailbreak leak reveals that the official jailbreak may be released within the next day.

MultiMediaWill (Sayer) posted the following message on MacRumors:

"As a few of you know, comex wanted to talk to me by email. This is an exact copy of the emails to me. It appears that he confirms the JB release date. This may be a setup by him of some sort so take it as you want."

According to the screenshot comex tells Sayer at 1:49AM on July 4th:

"No, I didn't see your tweets. (I think they were deleted?) But if no more issues come up, it should be ready by tomorrow."

Depending on how you read this, it suggests that Comex could release the jailbreak on July 4th or July 5th.

You can see the screenshot below; however, please note we are unable to verify its authenticity.

The Story of How the iPad 2 Jailbreak Got Leaked

Ryan Lobbins, the person who found the iPad 2 jailbreak files, explains how they ended up being leaked by Will Sayer.

-----
This all started late one night on the 27th of June. I was playing Star Craft with some friends reading Comex's twitter updates like every other person waiting for the jailbreak. That is when I had a crazy idea just to search a site he posted in a previous tweet. That site was www.qoid.us , during my initial search, the main thing that came up was comex's bannerbomb exploit for the wii. This lead me to believe even more that the site was his. The next thing I did was just do a search for directories on his site and that is when I stumbled upon it. I saw a folder called saffron that grabbed my attention, mainly because jbme 2.0 was star.

So what would you do if you stumbled on a website that had all the data for the jailbreak people have been waiting months for? At first I wasn't sure what to do, let alone believe I found the files. The only true indication that I found them was all the pdf files, deb files named after different iOS devices, and a php file. The last thing I wanted was to just send out all the files saying here they are. As someone who has worked on a project for years in the past I would hate for my work to leak out before my self or the team was ready. Comex had been working on this for almost a year.

The first thing I did was the obvious, test the files. From comex's tweets at the time I figured they were close to completion and wouldn't completely brick my iPad. The next was I made a copy of the files for my own purpose of trying on other devices, not to leak them. I didn't know if comex would have the files moved before I woke up the next day. Then as proof to my friends who had no reason to even want the jailbreak, but wanted to see it I uploaded them to this site. Worst mistake ever.

Now comes the next day, what would you do with the information you gained from decompiling and decompressing the files. You don't want to leak them, but there has been no information on any updates. People are starting to doubt the jailbreak is even real. What I did was just spread information about the jailbreak, no pictures, no files, just me posting on forums what I know. Of course there were people calling me names saying I am a troll and other names. Next I sent off private messages to two people on the forums I was posting on. At that point after a few messages the only thing I sent was a picture. That was the first and only thing I sent. The picture was of the new jailbreakme website, with the url removed so the site didn't get out. That was the end of it on June 28th.

I went on vacation on the 30th and won't be home until July 15th, but my curiosity started to get the better of me last night. I have these files that didn't work on my iPad, but I wondered if they would work at all. I contacted another person on the forums who was multimediawill aka appreviewer will aka Will Sayer. He tried one of the pdf files and it jailbroke his iPad. I was surprised, he was surprised. He swore up and down he wouldn't leak it, and I went to bed. That is when I woke up and saw my list of emails streaming in. Immediately the files were deleted, I felt stupid and horrible that my curiosity got the best of me and caused this. I never intended for it to get leaked out this big. In all I apologize to comex for my actions. I don't want attention, and never wanted to spread his work like Will did. I was just curious, and this curiosity caused this. So in the grand scheme of things the leak was probably 10% my fault, I found the files, made a copy and re-hosted them, but Will was the exact opposite. He wanted attention and spread the news to tech blogs made videos and even spread the links to the files on my site.
-----

Lobbins has since deleted all the files in his possession and Comex is now working as fast as he can to get the jailbreak completed before Apple releases an update to iOS 4.3.3.

Comex Responds to Stolen iPad 2 Jailbreak, Warns iPad 2 Users to Save SHSH Blobs

Comex has responded to the leaked iPad 2 jailbreak that was apparently stolen using a possible dictionary attack.

Congratulations, some moron used a dictionary attack(?) to leak a buggy version and put me on a useless time limit.

Let's hope the time limit isn't too short... hasn't been in the past but could always change. Everyone use TinyUmbrella and save 4.3.3.

Hopefully, Apple isn't able to close the exploit before comex finishes the jailbreak. To be safe please follow comex's advice and save your SHSH Blobs using one of the tutorials below...

iPad 2 Jailbreak For iOS 4.3.3 JailbreakMe 3.0 Leaked In The Wild

We strongly
recommend all to stay away from any unauthorized released of any jailbreaks (for safety and security reasons) if there is a working jailbreak then it should be out shortly, please this post is only to show that there is a working jailbreak. We have stayed away from this jailbreak and are waiting for an official release from comex
.

A few weeks ago, we reported that Comex, author of JailbreakMe, was working on a fully untethered iPad 2 Jailbreak. After two weeks of radio silence from the developer, what seems to be JailbreakMe 3.0, with support for the iPad 2, was leaked by one of the private beta testers. Here’s how to get it.

All you’ll need is an iPad running iOS 4.3.3 or under (iOS 5 isn’t supported yet) and an Internet connection. No computer is required for this jailbreak.

(Based on the video embedded below)

Step 1: Launch Mobile Safari and navigate over to this URL.

Step 2: Once you’ve done that, Safari should automatically close, that’s completely normal. You should now see a Cydia icon on your Home Screen, with a progress bar, much like any other official app while it’s downloading.

Step 3: Once the Cydia icon disappears, reboot your device. Once it powers back up, which could take a little bit longer than usual, your iPad 2 should be jailbroken.

For other iOS devices on iOS 4.3.3, check out this link (or this mirror here).

Check out the following video for more information:

Important Disclaimer: these files weren’t officially released by Comex, and could therefore be completely fake, or even harmful. There’s nothing stopping this from being an elaborate scheme to distribute malware. If you want to play it safe, do not apply this jailbreak just yet and wait for the official version, which should be available at JailbreakMe.com. Use this method at your own risk. We at Redmond Pie haven’t tried it, and wont recommend you to try it either.

JailbreakMe, which first became available in 2007, is by far the easiest way to jailbreak an iOS device. Since its inception, it relied on a PDF exploit in Mobile Safari, much like it does today. As other jailbreak methods became more and more complicated, JailbreakMe has remained as simple as opening a PDF document.

This isn’t the first tool made by this developer that was allegedly leaked ahead of time. Last year, Frash, a tool that allowed Flash to be downloaded onto iOS devices, was leaked ahead of time.

UPDATE 1: Confirmed! This actually works. The following image, courtesy of our reader Chris De Jager, shows Cydia 1.1.2 running on iPad 2, iOS 4.3.

UPDATE 2: Links to 4.3.3 PDFs for iPad 2, which were posted here http://46.4.219.216/jailbreakme3/, have been taken down.

(Thanks to Ven000m for the hat tip!)

More news on the Verizon iPad 2 recall

We’ve been getting a steady stream of news since we broke the Verizon iPad 2 recall news late last night. We initially postulated that the recall may have been due to FedEx glitches or issues with engraving since most of the people in the discussions had both of those in common. However, we’re now hearing that Apple Store employees are also being told to scan iPad 2s and if they are a certain serial number allotment, to send them back to Apple.

Apple has given all the stores a list of serial numbers to scan, if it’s a match we were told to set aside and ship back to Apple, these are only for Verizon ipads. This was to be done on Monday and continue to scan all shipments thru June 11. I had over one hundred to send back.
Why is Apple pulling these? We aren’t sure but we’re hearing this:

Verizon iPad 2s aren\’t being sent back due to engraving. If someone activates a cellular connection on the device, then wants to view or edit account information, they can’t. They receive a message that it is activated, and that\’s it. I saw someone open at least 6 looking for one that didn\’t do it. It\’s device specific, not software.
Again, please send any further information on this to TipsForLimerain.com@gmail.com – especially specific serial numbers of affected iPad 2s..
*thanks 9to5Mac*

Is Apple recalling Verizon iPad 2s?

Update: We’ve heard this from an Apple Store employee and have an updated post:

Apple has given all the stores a list of serial numbers to scan, if it\’s a match we were told to set aside and ship back to Apple, these are only for Verizon ipads. This was to be done on Monday and continue to scan all shipments thru June 11. I had over one hundred to send back.
We’ve gotten numerous tips over the past few hours that Verizon iPads being shipped from China are being being returned to Apple mid-shipment. It isn’t certain why they are being returned but they appear to all be Verizon iPads, engraved and shipped via FedEX.

This isn’t the first issue Apple has had with Verizon iPads. Earlier this year, Discussion forums went ablaze with complaints that were later fixed.

One reader writes:

Apple may be having problems with Verizon iPad 2. I was supposed to receive my ipad2 64gb today but all of a sudden fedex sent it back to apple and said that apple requested it\’s return. Apple\’s customer care seems to be unaware or unwilling to acknowledge the problem. I went on the discussion boards on apple.com and there are a number of people discussing the same thing and all posters so far have all ordered Verizon ipad2\’s.
Apple’s Discussion forums are also starting to fill up with similar complaints:

Let us know if you find anything out. I ordered mine early may and yesterday I was thrilled to see it actually say out for delivery! Then I got the delivery exception. Called fedex and heard the same thing you did. Called Apple and they had no clue why just that it would be delivered tomorrow(today). Called fedex again and they assured me that the package was already on it’s way back to it’s origin. Now this morning my tracking number reads undeliverable, return to sender. So, my 1-2 weeks turned into 3 to ship and it some how took fedex 2 weeks to get it to my city and now this. I wonder how long it will be before I actually see my iPad.
Update: We’ve just received this report from a reader:

I was in the apple store in Lakeside Mall (LA) and I saw two people coming from back of the store (exiting the stock room) and leaving the store with a cart full of boxes. The boxes had \”verizon 64gb\” and \”verizon 32gb\” written on the outside of them. I assumed they were iPads. This may relate to your story of Apple recalling Verizon iPads. -Rory
Another:

I am having the exact problem right now. And it makes no sense that it is Fedex problem, because Apple explained to me that a new one was being sent out. However, my iPad is engraved so they would not make a duplicate, or waste a perfectly good iPad. If Fedex had this problem Apple would fix it right away to avoid customer service problem. There must be a problem with Apple, because Apple would fix a problem with Fedex on the spot to eliminate extra work and cost to them self. I am actually having trouble getting a credit.
Another:

Mine is a white, 32GB, Verizon 3G with engraving, Apple just told me they were recalled and that they would be re- ordered and that they were authorized to issue a $ credit. He said I would get an email about it. I think it was Apple’s bad. We ordered a black one at the same time and recieved it on Monday, he said that one is fine.
Another:

So same bunch of crap is happening to us as we type….ipad2 makes it all they way from CHINA to within 40 miles of our house and they are returning it to the sender!! In Elk Grove! I called Fedex and they said it was an Apple request. Apple says it’s a fedex problem – and I quote “why would we ask to return your ipad that you have been waiting for”. She went on to say that it should be delivered to us in “1-2 days”. I wonder if they weren’t hacked or something and a bunch of return to sender requests were sent out. I just can’t believe it frankly….
Another:

Exactly the same thing happened to me yesterday too!! I got the same response from FedEx, the customer service rep there said the package was flagged “return to sender” several times. I don’t believe they even attempted delivery as there was no tag left on my door either! Apple was clueless but did tell me they had a lot of calls from customers with the same problem. He said he’ll pass the information on to his manager & a new order will be placed for me. I’m thinking they had tech problems with this batch of iPad units but aren’t admitting it! Its frustrating that they won’t admit what the problem was. So back to the waiting game I go.
Another:

Mine was a black, 64G, Verizion 3G with engraving. I did order the dock & a camera connection kit. These were delivered in less than a week. I just spoke to my FedEx delivery person too. He said he hadn’t any package, for me, from Apple yesterday. Interesting!
And many more. Anyone else having this issue?

iPad 3G Has Been Hacked to Enable Full Phone and SMS Functionality!

The iPad 3G has reportedly been hacked to enable full phone and SMS functionality by iPhoneIslam.

A hack that will change the game. Can you imagine turning your iPad to a fully functional phone.

With No Special Hardware all what you need is Jailbroken iPad 3G and your iPad 3G will do anything you expect from iPhone... Phone Calls, SMS, FaceTime by Phone Number... ETC

iPhoneIslam was behind the FaceIt3GS tweak as well. While they have no released date for PhoneItiPad. It will apparently be available on the Cydia Store 'very soon'.

*thanks iclarified*

iSuppli forecasts Foxconn explosion could cost Apple half a million iPads

Besides the extremely unfortunate loss of life, Bloomberg posts a dire scenario on iPad production laid out by IHS iSuppli this evening:

The drop in manufacturing will depend on how long the plant is closed following a May 20 explosion that killed three people and injured at least 15, according to ISuppli. The total could be even greater if the suspension of operations at the facility lasts longer than a month, the firm said. Another Foxconn factory in Shenzhen that produces iPads may not be able to make up for the lost output, ISuppli said. The manufacturing breakdown may lead Apple to miss ISuppli’s forecast of 7.4 million iPad 2 shipments in the quarter ending in June, the El Segundo, California-based research firm said.
Not all analysts are as down with Apple Bull Shaw Wu saying there may not be cause to worry. He said in a report today that the concerns are “overdone” and that production at other facilities is being ramped up to make up for the shortfalls. He expects Apple to sell 6.8 million iPads in the June quarter.
