Winocm: The Jailbreak 'Needs Work But Its Almost There'

Hacker winocm, who previously demonstrated a jailbreak of the iPhone 5 on iOS 6.1.4, has tweeted with a minor status update.

The status of the jailbreak is pretty much: it needs work but its almost there. (For a very small subset of devices.)

At this point in time its unclear which devices winocm is planning to support; however, it's likely that the iPhone 5 will be one of them. In early September, he tweeted photos of Cydia running on an iOS 6.1.4 iPhone 5. Previously, he also indicated the successful jailbreak of the iPhone 4 so that's another device that could be supported.

Please note, this is not a jailbreak for iOS 7.

Pod2g is Increasingly Confident That iOS 7 Will Get a Public Jailbreak

In a tweet today, pod2g, a member of the evad3rs, the team who brought you the evasi0n jailbreak, stated he was "being more and more confident about an iOS 7 public jailbreak." He also noted "that does not mean soon" in regards to an ETA, so don't expect one anytime soon.

Pod2g was replying to @pimskeks who tweeted that he and pod2g were "working on funny things."

In response to pod2g's revelation, pimskeks tweeted, "hey @pod2g that's confidential."

A few days ago, the evad3rs noted that they have already achieved unsigned userland code execution on iOS 7, giving them a good platform for poking the kernel.

Evad3rs Achieve Unsigned Userland Code Execution on iOS 7

Planetbeing, a member of the evad3rs hacking team, has announced that they've achieved unsigned userland code execution on iOS 7.

He made the announcement in a recent tweet:

Achieved unsigned userland code execution with some of our stuff in reserve. Now we have a good platform for poking the kernel.

Basically this means that they've got behind Apple's walls of security and now can poke at the kernel. Bugs found in the kernel could be used to create a jailbreak for the new operating system.

Yesterday, the team announced that they were investigating iOS 7 GM seed to see which of their exploits still worked.

The Evad3rs Begin Testing Their Jailbreak Exploits on iOS 7

The evad3rs, a group of hackers who released the jailbreak for iOS 6, have announced that they are now actively investigating iOS 7 to identify which of their exploits still work.

Planetbeing tweeted the news moments ago:

Since everyone loves updates: @evad3rs have now started to actively look at iOS 7.

We are currently in a reconnaissance phase where we are identifying which exploits we have still work.

Since the Gold Master of iOS 7 has been released to developers it is too late for Apple to make any changes to the software before the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c hit shelves.

Untether Found for iOS 6.1.3 Jailbreak

Hacker winocm has announced that he has a binary that will perform an untether of the iOS 6.1.3 jailbreak.

The announcement was made via his Twitter account:

I now have a binary that untethers 6.1.3. Needs some more work though.

While a tethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3 is currently possible for users with the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, or iPod touch 4G, winocm has only confirmed that he has his code running on an iPhone 4:

I have my own code running inside the iOS 6.1.3 kernel on iPhone 4.

Notably, he says it's not useful for iOS 7.

It’s not useful on iOS 7. I don’t care about iOS 7. Other people are taking care of iOS 7.

Warning Jailbreakers Should Not Update to iOS 6.1.3

Jailbreakers should not update to iOS 6.1.3 as it will likely remove the ability to jailbreak.

Last month, planetbeing (David Wang) revealed that iOS 6.1.3 beta 2 patched at least one of the five bugs used to jailbreak. Specifically, the flaw in the operating system's time zone settings is no longer there.

It's very likely that Apple includes at least this patch if not others in the public release of iOS 6.1.3. We'll let you know as soon as we have confirmation from the Evad3rs; however, at this time you should not update.

It may also be prudent to save your SHSH blobs if you haven't already. Instructions can be found here: Mac, Windows.

Senator Ron Wyden Introduces Bill to Make Cell Phone Unlocking Legal

Senator Ron Wyden has introduced the 'Wireless Device Independence Act' a bill that if passed will make cell phone unlocking legal, reports The Hill.

The move comes just one day after the White House and the FCC came out in support of making cell phone unlocking legal in response to a petition that garnered 114,000 signatures. Since 2006, The Library of Congress had issued an exemption to the Digital Millennium Copyright Act that allowed for cell phone unlocking; however, it decided not to extend that exemption past January, 2013.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy said, "I intend to work in a bipartisan, bicameral fashion to restore users’ ability to unlock their phones and provide them with the choice and freedom that we have all come to expect in the digital era."

Sen. Amy Klobuchar who chairs the Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Antitrust, Competition Policy and Consumer Rights, said she also plans to introduce her own bill this week.

“Consumers should be free to choose the phone and service that best fits their needs and their budgets," Klobuchar said.

Rep. Jason Chaffetz also recently tweeted that he is working on cellphone unlocking legislation. "You own the phone, you should be able to unlock it," he wrote.

All consumers should be thankful to those who took the time the sign petition as it appears to have made a significant impact.

Evad3rs Confirm iOS 6.1.2 is Still Jailbreakable

Planetbeing has confirmed that it is still possible to jailbreak devices on the recently released iOS 6.1.2.

Not yet able to test all devices, but it's looking good for 6.1.2. iPad mini wi-fi and iPhone 5 are still jailbreakable.

It's likely that the Evad3rs will release an update to Evasi0n that will support the new firmware. If you are going to update, a full restore via iTunes is recommended. Also please check back here to ensure your device has been confirmed working before you update.

iOS 6.1 Jailbreak to Support All 22 Device Variations

MuscleNerd, a popular hacker and member of the evad3rs, has revealed that the upcoming iOS 6.1 jailbreak will support all 22 device variations and likely the atv2.

@MuscleNerd is every other device supported?

@unicornhacker yes, every other 6.1 device variation will be supported. All TWENTY-TWO of them (omg!). Plus atv2 if it's out in time.

Unfortunately, with the exploit that's being used, the Apple TV 3 will not be supported.

@MuscleNerd @evad3rs_jb So those of us with atv3 still have to wait for a bootrom

@arovik not necessarily. Although atv3 uses far fewer services that can be tampered with, it's not isolated. But it can't use this next JB

As announced by pod2g, the team is waiting for iOS 6.1 final to drop before releasing their jailbreak. Apple recently released iOS 6.1 'Beta 5'. Interestingly, this build is not really a beta but a publicly releasable build.

Pod2g Confirms an Untethered Jailbreak is Ready, Credits Planetbeing and Pimskeks

Pod2g confirmed that the Evad3rs Dev-Team is ready with a jailbreak for iOS 6.1 and credits Planetbeing and Pimskeks for the accomplishment in an interview with iDigitalTimes.

"For your information and this is important to me that everybody knows about it also, this jailbreak will be @planetbeing and @pimskeks. I arrived at the end, gave ideas that pushed them to their maximum, I kinda unblocked the situation, but it would certainly have happened without me helping."

"Now I am helping as much as I can in terms of communication, websites, and also development, but I was not involved the same way as previous, focused on my work and all... Yes, in order @planetbeing, @pimskeks, then me."

According to the hacker, iOS 6.0 is jailbroken as is iOS 6.1 Beta 4. The team is now waiting for iOS 6.1 GM to drop after which they can confirm there is no new security measures introduced. Once everything has been tested successfully the team will release the jailbreak.

"6.0 is jailbroken, 6.1 beta 4 also. Now we are waiting 6.1 to confirm and release."

The new Evad3rs Dev-Team consists of Pod2g, MuscleNerd, Planetbeing, and Pimskeks.

Pod2g, MuscleNerd, Planetbeing, and Pimskeks Form New Evad3rs Dev-Team

Pod2g has announced the formation of new Dev-Team consisting of himself, MuscleNerd, Planetbeing, and Pimskeks.

We (+ @MuscleNerd @planetbeing @pimskeks) are the @evad3rs. We don't take any donations ATM, please don't be fooled at donating to others.

The team has also created a new Twitter account which can be found here. No tweets have been made from the account yet.

Notably, the team submitted a paper entitled, "Swiping through modern security features" to #HITB2013AMS the Hack in the Box security conference taking place in Amsterdam on April 8 - 11, 2013.

It appears that planetbeing and pod2g have found the necessary vulnerabilities to release a public jailbreak and are waiting for iOS 6.1 to drop before doing so.

Planetbeing Declares 'The Future is Looking Bright for Jailbreaking'

Planetbeing has given us hope that a public jailbreak is near with his latest tweet.

Earlier today the hacker tweeted saying, "Tons of progress the last few days. I think the future is looking bright for jailbreaking. :)"

His tweet was followed up by one from fellow hacker pimskeks who said, "yeah @planetbeing looks like we made some #awesomesauce lately :D"

Progress on the public jailbreak appears to have accelerated after planetbeing teamed up with pod2g to find two new vulnerabilities.

Previously, planetbeing said that its unlikely a jailbreak will be released until iOS 6.1 drops; however, that is expected shortly. If the devs now have enough exploits to retain a failbreak that means we could see a jailbreak release in the very near future.

Pod2g and Planetbeing Find Two New Vulnerabilities for iOS 6 Jailbreak

Pod2g and planetbeing have found two new vulnerabilities but are still missing the initial code execution for a public jailbreak release.

Yesterday we reported that pod2g and planetbeing had teamed up to do some work on the iOS 6 jailbreak. Early this morning pod2g revealed that they have found two new vulnerabilities in just a day.

Made some nice progress today with @pod2g. I think I'll try to reward myself with a nap. :)

pod2g: @planetbeing oh yeah! 2 new vulnerabilities in a day, chance was with us. But we still miss that initial code execution for a public jb :/

It's great that progress is being made. Hopefully, the two find that last piece of the puzzle and are able to release their jailbreak to rest of us.

Pod2g May Now Be Working With Planetbeing on the iOS 6 Jailbreak

A recent tweet from planetbeing suggests that he and pod2g may now be working together towards a publicly releasable jailbreak of iOS 6.

Earlier this evening, planetbeing tweeted, "Made some nice progress today with @pod2g. I think I'll try to reward myself with a nap. :)".

When announcing his new company, 2G Lab, Pod2g revealed that he had not been present in the security field for a few months while he concentrated on building his PodDJ app. Now that the app has been released he said that he'll "focus on both subjects."

At the start of the month, planetbeing noted that he was in possession of an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.0.2; however, an additional exploit or two was needed before a public release in order to retain a failbreak to help with finding future jailbreaks.

Hopefully, with planetbeing and pod2g teaming up, we will finally see a jailbreak for iOS 6!

Planetbeing Has Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 6.0.2, Explains Delay in Release

Planetbeing reveals on Reddit that he already has an untethered jailbreak of iOS 6.0.2 on his device and explains why it hasn't been released yet.

Yeah, I'm not really sure what all the doom and gloom is about. The fact is, I have an untethered iOS 6.0.2 JB running on my iPhone 5 right now. The reasons it's not released are because 1. releasing it would burn an exploit we want to save for ourselves so we can always get in to look at new firmware and help JB in the future, 2. iOS 6.1 is coming very soon and will likely break a small part of it anyway, there's no point in sacrificing the many bugs it won't break.

Anyway, where there are 4+ bugs (that it took to get this to work), there's gotta be one or two more so while jailbreaking is getting harder, reports of its death are highly exaggerated.

Planetbeing's comments come after Pod2g encouraged Twitter users to demand an open iOS from Apple leading to speculation that the Dev-Team had given up.
