How to Jailbreak Your iPhone Using Absinthe 2.0 (Windows) [5.1.1]

These are instructions on how to perform an untethered jailbreak of your iPhone on iOS 5.1.1 using Absinthe for Windows.

Warning***: Before you continue make sure to do a backup of your device in iTunes as you may lose your Camera Roll during this process.

Step One
Download the latest version of Absinthe from here.

Step Two
Extract the downloaded archive.



Step Three
Double click the absinthe-win-2.0.exe file from the folder that was just extracted.



This will create a new folder called absinthe-win-2.0.



Open the newly created folder and launch absinthe.exe.



Step Three
As prompted, connect your iPhone to the computer via USB. Make sure to remove any passcodes or VPN settings you've previously set.



Step Four
Click the Jailbreak button to begin




Step Five
The application will take you through several steps to jailbreak including: beginning jailbreak, sending initial jailbreak data, sending final jailbreak data, waiting for reboot, and waiting for process to complete.










Step Six
You will be informed that the jailbreak is 'Done'.



Step Seven
In a few moments you will notice Cydia appear on your Springboard!

iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak is Nearly Ready for Release

Pod2g has announced that iPad 3,3 support has been added to the Absinthe jailbreak utility, leaving only the iPad 2,4 jailbreak to be implemented.

OK just added iPad3,3 support to Absinthe thanks to @flawlessfox. Only remains iPad2,4 now but we need the actual device.

Any people of #HITB2012AMS has an iPad2,4? Model number: either MC954 or MC989. Please check in Settings / General / About.

Support for the following devices has been completed:
- iPhone 3Gs, iPhone 4, iPhone 4 CDMA, iPhone 4S, iPad 1, iPad 2 Wifi, iPad 2 GSM, iPad 2 CDMA, iPad 3 Wifi, iPad 3 CDMA, iPad 3 Global, iPod 3G, iPod 4G, AppleTV 2.

If anyone at the HITBSecConf has the new iPad2,4 device please contact @pod2g.

Quick Info Sheet for iOS 5.1.1 Untethered Jailbreak

MuscleNerd from the iPhone Dev-Team has posted some details on the upcoming untethered jailbreak from pod2g.

● All info below is tentative and subject to last minute refinements

● @pod2g's 5.1.1 jailbreak+untether is working out great. All devices are covered except for AppleTV3,1, which currently has no path for jailbreaking.
- the initial 5.1.1 plan used a kernel exploit from @westbaer which unfortunately precluded use in iPod3,1 and iPhone2,1
- @planetbeing stepped up and provided a kernel exploit that covers both of those. Those two JBers are the bomb!

● The 5.1.1 A5 JB is very similar to the A5 5.0.1 JB. @pimskeks has done a tremendous job supporting both 5.0.1 and 5.1.1 in absinthe

● Similar to 5.0.1, there will also be a 5.1.1 CLI "cinject" binary and redsn0w version of the 5.1.1 JB+untether. Absinthe, cinject, and redsn0w will all provide the same JB in different fashions.
- timing is indeterminate. Plans are for this week, but a number of factors can influence that.

Untethered iOS 5.1.1 Jailbreak is Just Days Away From Release

Pod2g has announced that the untethered jailbreak of iOS 5.1.1 is just days away from release.

Thanks to awesome work of @planetbeing and @pimskeks, we're near ready for a release. Now it's a matter of days.

Here is the list of devices that are known to work for sure:

● iPad 1

How to Perform an Untethered Jailbreak of Your iPhone 4 Windows 5.0.1

These are instructions on how to perform an untethered jailbreak of your iPhone 4 on 5.0.1 using RedSn0w for Windows. The Mac version of this tutorial is here.

This procedure will cause you to upgrade your baseband potentially ruining your chances for an unlock. Please follow a Windows tutorial on how to update to iOS 5.0.1 using a custom ipsw if you need an unlock.

If you want to jailbreak a lower firmware version you can find the appropriate tutorial here.

Step One
Create a folder on your desktop called Pwnage

Download the latest version of RedSn0w from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. Likewise, download the 5.0.1 firmware from here and place it in the Pwnage folder. (Note: you do not need to download the 5.0.1 firmware if you are already on iOS 5.0.1)

Extract the RedSn0w zip file by double clicking it.



Step Two: (You can skip this step if iOS 5 is already installed on your device)
Connect your iPhone to the computer and launch iTunes.



Select your iPhone from the list of devices on the left. Now hold down Shift and click the Restore button. Restore is preferred as it won't create any wasted space on your iPhone.


Navigate to the Pwnage folder on your desktop and select the 5.0 firmware ipsw. Click the Choose button to continue.



iTunes will now update your iPhone to the new firmware.

Step Three
Launch the redsn0w application from the redsn0w folder we extracted earlier.



**Windows 7 users may want to try running the redsn0w executable mode as an administrator in Windows Vista compatibility. You can do this by right clicking the executable and selecting Properties from the contextual menu.

Step Four
Once RedSn0w opens click the Jailbreak button




Step Five
Plug your iPhone into the computer and make sure its OFF then click the Next button




Step Six
RedSn0w will now guide you through the steps to get into DFU mode. You can find more help with DFU mode here



Hold down both the Home button and the Power button for 10 seconds.



Release the Power button and continue holding the Home button until RedSn0w detects the device.



Step Seven
Your iPhone will now reboot




Step Eight
RedSn0w will now prepare the jailbreak data.



Step Nine
Select Cydia from the list of options and click Next.




Step Ten
Your iPhone will now be rebooted again and RedSn0w will begin uploading the new RAM Disk and Kernel.



Step Eleven
Once this is complete you will be notified that RedSn0w is done. When your iPhone finishes rebooting (5 minutes or so) it will be jailbroken with Cydia on the SpringBoard.

New Time Capsules to run iOS on A4 or A5 processors?

According to Ars, the Time Capsule/Airport Extreme refreshes we’ve been hearing about are getting some iOS/A4-5 love.

Our own source tells Ars that the revised hardware is believed to be built around Apple’s own A4 or A5 processor, and will run iOS much like the most recent Apple TV model.

IDC: iPad and other ARM devices can be classified as PCs

Influential market research firm IDC has begun listing ARM-based mobile chips alongside Intel PC processors. Previously, smartphone and tablets chips based on Arm Holdings’ CPU blueprints were listed in a category separate of Intel-based PC chips. CNET relayed an IDC research note that says:

For the first time, IDC is forecasting PC microprocessor units by processor architecture, including those based on x86 (Intel and Advanced Micro Devices) and those based on ARM.
IDC didn’t say whether the change means categorizing iPad as a personal computing device. If so, grim surveys showing a decline in consumer PC sales might look different. Folks are increasingly picking up tablets and prolonging computer upgrades. IDC expects that by 2015 over thirteen percent of PC processors will be based on ARM designs.

A number of chip makers have licenses ARM’s IP. ARM-designed processors are then combined on a single die with other components, such as graphics cores, the memory controller and logic that binds it all together. ARM’s CPU designs dominate in the mobile space, powering the vast majority of smartphones and tablets out there. This includes market leading iPad plus iPhone 4 and iPod touch.

Apple’s A5 chip in iPad 2 is based on ARM’s dual-core Cortex-A9 processor design and is being manufactured by Samsung, which is also an ARM licensee. Texas Instruments and Qualcomm, chip makers behind processors in most Android devices, use ARM designs.

Graphics giant Nvidia also licensed ARM chips for its Tegra processors. The company should debut a new desktop chip by 2012 capable of running Windows 8 as Microsoft announced at CES 2011 that its operating system will support ARM-based architectures in addition to Intel’s x86 platform.

X-Ray of Apple A5 Chip Reveals Samsung as Manufacturer Images

X-rays of the Apple A5 processor chip reveal that Samsung is the manufacturer and not TSMC as rumored earlier.

Chipworks compared the A5 processor to the A4 processor to confirm it came from the same source.

At this scale even electron microscopes start to run out of steam, so not the clearest of images in either case, but good enough to see the similar shape of the transistor gates and the dielectric layers. So at least this sample of the A5 is fabbed by Samsung, just as all Apple’s processor chips have been for the last while.

They also confirm the 512MB of RAM.

Flash memory is flash memory, the DRAM in the A5 package is 512 MB instead of 256 MB, and the touchscreen control uses the same trio of chips as the iPad 1 – not even a single chip solution as we've seen in the later iPhones. And the 3G version uses the same chipset as the Verizon iPhone launched a few weeks ago.
