Apple Expects iPad 2 to Outsell Market Estimates

Touch panel shipment estimates reveal that Apple is planning to sell far more iPad 2s than the market expects.

DigiTimes reports:

LG Display is estimated to land orders for 35 million iPad panels in 2011, and Samsung and Chimei Innolux (CMI), who is scheduled to join Apple's iPad supply chain in the first quarter of 2011, will each receive orders for 15 million units.

Based on these estimates, iPad panel shipments (including first and second generation models) will reach 65 million units in 2011, which is significantly higher than market estimates of 45-48 million units for the year.

The latest iPad 2 rumors have the device sporting a sleeker shape, a camera, and a wide-range speaker.

Angry Birds Creator Predicts iOS Will Be Number One For a Long Time

Peter Verterbacka, known as the 'Mighty Eagle' at Rovio Mobile, offers his thoughts on developing for different platforms during an interview with technmarketing.

When asked how he viewed the various mobile OSs in regard to the future of mobile technology, this is his reply:

"Apple will be the number one platform for a long time from a developer perspective, they have gotten so many things right. And they know what they are doing and they call the shots. Android is growing, but it's also growing complexity at the same time. Device fragmentation not the issue, but rather the fragmentation of the ecosystem. So many different shops, so many different models. The carriers messing with the experience again. Open but not really open, a very Google centric ecosystem. And paid content just doesn’t work on Android.

Besides Apple and Google, it will be interesting to see how long it will take for Nokia to get their act together. MeeGo is clearly the future there, remains to be seen how big and how soon. HP-Palm webOS is a really cool OS and has been a pleasure developing for that one, but the volume is irrelevant for the time being. Everything else is more or less "interesting" right now, ie no real business to be had, at least not yet."

Geohot Registers Rubyra1n for Next Jailbreak?

Domain registration records reveal that Geohot has registered the domain Rubyra1n.com, according to thetechjournal.

According to Whois records, Blackra1n, Limera1n & Rubyra1n are registered under George Hotz.It looks like, Geohot registered Limera1n & Rubyra1n back in March, 2010. With that said, don’t expect a Rubyra1n Jailbreak anytime soon. Because, Limera1n exploit is capable of jailbreaking all current iOS Device. So, it seems, GeoHot is going to use Rubyra1n, for the Next Gen iPad [iPad 2] / Next Gen iPhone [iPhone 5 / CDMA iPhone].

The limera1n domain was discovered in April and did end up being used for an important jailbreak release. Hopefully, rubyra1n has an exciting future as well. Currently, the domain is parked with GoDaddy.

CNN Names Antenna Gate the Biggest Tech Fail of 2010

CNN has named Antenna Gate the biggest tech fail of 2010. Ping also makes the list at number ten.

1. iPhone 4 'Antennagate'
First Apple said the problem didn't exist. Then they said it was a software issue. Then they kind-of admitted it existed and gave away free cases to help. Then, they said it doesn't really exist anymore and stopped giving away the bumpers.

Months later, the problem is all but forgotten and the phones show no sign of dipping in popularity. So "fail," in this case, is a pretty relative term.

10. iTunes Ping
There's a whole social network set up in Apple's iTunes store now. Didn't know that? Well, there you go.

Not all musical artists are on there. And it doesn't integrate with Facebook. (Although Ping and Twitter just linked up). And, a lot of the time, it simply pushes you to buy music. Needless to say, Ping hasn't really caught on.

Hit this link to view the entire list...

Apple Sued Twice Over User Tracking

Apple is facing two lawsuits over the collection and sharing of user data with outside companies, according to an iLounge report.

Both suits—Lalo v. Apple and Freeman v. Apple—were filed in the Northern District of California; the former was first reported by Bloomberg while the latter was spotted by Wired. Both suits appear to be heavily based on research compiled and published by the Wall Street Journal, which showed that some apps send age, gender, location, and phone identifier information to ad networks without notifying the user.

The suit, filed on behalf of Jonathan Lalo, complains that "Some apps are also selling additional information to ad networks, including users' location, age, gender, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation and political views."

The Freeman suit holds Apple responsible for approving the applications that track user data. "Defendant Apple, by exercising significant control over App developers and sharing profits with them, has created a 'community of interest' with the other Defendants to render them joint venturers, who are responsible for each other’s torts. Defendant Apple has also aided and abetted the remaining Defendants in the commission of their legal wrongs against Plaintiffs and the proposed class."

Lalo identifies offending applications such as Pandora, Paper Toss, the Weather Channel and Dictionary.com, naming them as defendants along with Apple. Freeman names Toss It, Text4Plus, The Weather Channel, Talking Tom Cat, and Pimple Popper Lite in addition to Apple.
