Foxconn’s $12 billion Brazilian iPad factory in jeopardy

According to Reuters, Foxconn’s new manufacturing plant in Brazil may be in jeopardy due to the company’s “crazy demands” related to tax breaks, lack of a skilled workforce, and the logistics of necessary infrastructure. The report claims after talking to government officials, “it is unclear whether the project will ever get off the ground”.

“The talks have been very difficult, and the project for a Brazilian iPad is in doubt,” one official said. “(Foxconn) is making crazy demands” for tax breaks and other special treatment, the official added.
Brazilian Minister of Science and Technology Aloizio Mercadante says the planned $12 billion investment might become a little less than originally expected. Reuters even suggests it’s possible Foxconn may only assemble iPads in Brazil using parts made elsewhere, rather than producing components onsite:

“One option could be for Foxconn or a Brazilian partner to simply assemble foreign-made parts to the iPad, rather than producing screens and other components locally. Other steps could also be taken to reduce the project’s scale, which may simply have been too ambitious for all parties.”
The project, which was initially set to begin production in July, was pushed back to November due to similar concerns. On September 14th, we told you Aloizio Mercadante confirmed that iPads made at Foxconn’s new plant in Jundiaí, near São Paulo, would hit the market by December. It’s unclear now whether or not the deal will fall through.

Mercedes-Benz shows off “iPhone Interface Plus” concept, coming 2012

The concept video above shows off the Mercedes-Benz’ vision for the “future of multimedia online systems” using smartphones as a media hub, most of which seems to resemble the description of their newly announced “iPhone Interface Plus” concept.

Mercedes is showing off some pretty impressive iPhone integration at this year’s IAA Motor Show in Frankfurt. In what we assume is a major evolution of their Media Interface Plus accessory unveiled last year, the company is set to introduce an “iPhone Interface Plus” concept, available as a retrofit on every Mercedes Benz starting summer 2012.

Working together with a free app from the App Store, an iPhone will be concealed in the “glove compartment and fully integrated into the vehicle electronics”. You can then use hardware controls and the a larger display on the vehicle’s dashboard to control and view content with as little distraction as possible while driving.

The press release explains:



“…the iPhone® screen can be seen on the display screen of the audio system, the audio signals are played through the car’s loudspeakers and the smartphone itself can be controlled through the car’s rotary pushbutton – a perfect example of successful integration. And of course all the time the iPhone® is connected to the control unit, it will automatically be recharging.”
The Mercedes-Benz app is designed specifically for in-car use, allowing for easy one-click interaction with social networks, email, and GPS services, as well as text-to-speech capabilities for email, Twitter, and Facebook. The press release also mentions “holistic integration” with the ability to do things such as “Like currently playing media” and “Share your current destination via Facebook and Twitter”. Another interesting feature is the “Car Finder”, which as the name implies guides you backed to your parked vehicle.

Mercedes also announced a new “crash-proof holder” for iPad, which attaches the device to headrests for rear passenger viewing. From the press release:

“The iPad Integration Plus system for rear seat passengers can be tilted, or turned through 90°. This convenient docking station is an ergonomic solution that makes it possible to use the Apple iPad®, with all its familiar functions, in your Mercedes-Benz. All connection points are easily accessible. The battery can also be recharged, using a separate Apple data cable that links into the vehicle’s on-board electricity supply via an integrated USB interface.”

Bentley concept integrates two iPads, one Mac mini, and an iPod touch

Bentley used the Frankfurt Motor Show this week to unveil a new concept for their flagship Mulsanne luxury vehicle that integrates two iPads, two Apple wireless keyboards, one Mac mini, and an iPod touch as the heart of its entertainment system.



As you can see from the gorgeous images of the hand-crafted cabin, the Mulsanne concept packs in two retractable iPad workstations (equipped with full internet access) for rear passengers, with a wireless Apple bluetooth keyboard enclosed in a custom housing.





Bentley’s Alasdair Stewart said in a statement:

“Many customers use their time in the Mulsanne to keep on top of their business commitments or simply take a few moments to relax. This fully functioning concept highlights the Mulsanne’s potential to help busy executives to communicate effectively and quickly whilst travelling.”


The trunk houses a Mac mini that acts as a media center for a 15.6-inch HD display that drops down from the roof console, and also reportedly keeps the content on the two iPads in sync. An iPod touch sits on a built-in dock and acts as the control panel for the Rear Seat Entertainment and audio system, and the Mac mini’s Media Centre.

Of course this is just a concept as of yet, and we can only imagine the price tag, but it gives us a good idea of the automotive industry’s plans for Apple products down the road. iPad 3 battery packs to be thinner and lighter, mass production slated for Q1 2012

According to a report from Taiwan Economic News (via BGR), Apple’s yet to be announced iPad 3 will feature a battery pack that is “thinner and lighter” with a longer service life, slated to enter mass production in quarter one of next year.

Supplying the battery packs, which will apparently cost between 20% and 30% more than iPad 2 packs, will be Simplo Technology Co. and Dynapack International Technology Corp. The price increase is reportedly due to the new battery modules requiring “advanced technologies” in order to meet “CTIA IEEE 1625 standard for better quality and safety reliability”.

The report notes that initial deliveries of the packs will begin in the fourth quarter, which will provide the two suppliers with “record new highs in revenues for the quarter”.

iPhone 5 might lack dual LED flash, leaked parts would have you believe

Multiple leaks of various parts purported to belong to a fifth-generation iPhone, which we’ve been hearing is up for launch October 7, are a norm that late in the game. Today, MacRumors points (here and here) to several components allegedly sourced from suppliers. These parts might have been used in the design of iPhone 5. The back camera module, picture above next to its iPhone 4 counterpart, reveals the familiar compact design calling for the LED flash embedded closely to the CMOS sensor.

Surprisingly, the iPhone 5′s back camera appears to lack dual LED flash. Of course, you never know with those leaks. For all we know, this part could just as easily have been used in one of early iPhone 5 design prototypes. It could also be the case of a repair shop looking for some free coverage. As 9to5mac reported back in April, Apple is likely to keep iPhone 5 ahead of other smartphones in the camera department by using Sony’s eight-megapixel camera.

The company also might keep its current supplier, OmniVision. That company unveiled in May a 1080p camera sensor that could lend itself well to a thinner designs, said to be one of the iPhone 5′s treats. Asian trade publication DigiTimes followed-up with a report that both Sony and OmniVision cut a deal to supply Apple with eight-megapixel cameras for iPhone 5s. The other leaked parts reveal little new information, but are nevertheless interesting…



Take a prototype iPhone 5 battery provided by UK repair shop iPatchiPods said to be sourced “from their contacts”. Seen above, it is labeled “DVT_B3″, as in Device Verification Testing, which is the final prototyping phase preceding the actual production. The battery looks largely the same compared to iPhone 4′s and apparently sports the same power delivery. “Of course, we’re not sure how old the battery shown in the photo is, so the iPhone 5 very well could be in the final production stage”, MacRumors writes. You should also consider the possibility that this is simply an old prototype iPhone 4 battery. That leak corroborates another battery module leak from TVC Mall, also the source of other iPhone 5 replacement parts that include back camera lens and headphone audio jack flex cable. TVC Mall’s battery pack for iPhone 5 shows the rotated connector as opposed to its iPhone 4 counterpart. A recent leak involving audio jacks all but confirmed that iPhone 5, like its predecessor, will likely be offered in both black and white.

Apple is field-testing LTE iOS 5 devices, could the next-gen iPad run on LTE?

Besides the iPhone 5 release date, the hottest iPhone-related news topic as of late has been LTE. A recent report claimed that Apple’s carrier partners were already exploring LTE iPhones, and this rumor became juicier with the discovery of LTE antennas being installed in some Apple Store locations in the United States. Now, we have discovered that carriers are not only “testing” an LTE iOS device in some fashion, but Apple actually has references to LTE in their iOS 5 field-test application.

This could mean that Apple has actual LTE devices – whether they are iPhones, iPod touches, or iPads – in a field-test stage. Not just in their $100 million “black lab.” The news comes straight from Apple’s field-test application that is installed on fully functioning iOS devices. The big picture here is that carriers are not just testing Apple LTE devices in their previously revealed chambers, but Apple actually has multiple references to the technology in their iOS 5 field-testing mechanism. In fact, the LTE references are even present in certain developer build plist files, not just the field-test application, as discovered by MacRumors.

Apple’s LTE devices will be covering the current carrier-band spectrum, running on bands from 1.4 to 20 MHz. This Apple field-test application references LTE SIM-cards as well. This not only means that Apple’s current LTE test devices are built-up enough to support a SIM-card – not just a bunch of wiring on a board – but that hopes of an integrated SIM-card system are likely still not going to come to fruition (at least in their LTE device[s]). The field-test application will also collect usage logs for Apple, furthering evidence that this is not simply an in-lab or in-box testing by carriers, but full-on testing against LTE tower connections in the wild.

If Apple is actually testing LTE devices in the field, it may seem a bit obvious to some, but the most interesting part is that the testing could be happening right now, on iOS 5 devices. The next iPhone will be an iOS 5 device and so will the next iPod touch, but the most interesting iOS 5 device – to us, at least – is the iPad 3. This is Apple’s largest iOS device. The device that they could technically cram the most components and battery life into. You may recall Apple COO Tim Cook’s words on why the first-generation Verizon iPhone does not support LTE: LTE would “force design changes we wouldn’t make.”

Apple is gearing up to launch an iOS 5-packing third-generation iPad in early 2012. A 9.7 inch tablet would be perfect for an LTE chip because of the hardware’s naturally larger (compared to an iPhone) internal component space. As LTE networks grow from both Verizon and AT&T in the United States into the first half of 2012, the iPad 3 will be the perfect LTE launch device from Apple. Unlike the iPhone, users will not need to rely on having a constant cellular connection – in addition, most of the iPads sold are the WiFi-only models. We do not have any evidence from sources that claim the new iPad will be an LTE device, but just a single tidbit that is complete with a large dose of speculation and open to much discussion…

Apple begins testing TSMC A6 processor with 28-nanometer process, coming Q2 next year

Taiwan Economic News is reporting that local Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd (TSMC), the company slated to supply Apple with the A6 processor after a shift from Samsung, has begun trials of the new chip made with the company’s “newest 28-nanometer process and 3D stacking technologies”. However, dont expect to see the A6 in a new iteration of the iPad anytime soon, as the report suggests the processor wont be officially unveiled until Q2 of next year, at the earliest.

Included in the report:

TSMC has applied its newest 28-nanometer process and 3D stacking technologies to produce the next-generation processor A6, which is based on the ARM architecture and will undergo TSMC’s cutting-edge silicon interposer and bump on trace (BOT) methodologies. Industry insiders said that the manufacturing will help to pump considerable momentum into TSMC’s business growth starting next year, though the company has yet to comment on the deal for the moment.
This contradicts an earlier report thru Reuters which stated that test production had already begun in July. Both reports agreed that the final A6 processors would be complete and ready for iPad 3 in early 2012. EETimes had reported the move back in March which was said to involve Apple’s current A5 chip but that never materialized.

An Apple switch to TSMC would obviously be a huge blow to ‘frenemy’ Samsung who currently makes the iPad CPU, DRAM and supplies Flash storage as well.

Purported parts for next generation iPad and iPhone emerge ahead of rumored fall launches

Apple is rumored to launch a new version of the iPad sometime this fall with the main purported change being a 2048 x 1536 Retina Display. If new parts posted on an online reseller are any indication, this new iPad’s internal structure may be modified as well. The iFixYouri iPad repair shop has taken a look at these new parts and have provided us with descriptions for each of the four. The part you see on top is basically the full external button control cabling system for the next iPad. This includes the power switch, volume keys, and silent/ringer switch.

In terms of the authenticity of the purported iPad 3/HD parts, iFixYouri iPad 2 repair also tells us that the material used to build these parts is the same material found on the iPad 2 parts, but the structure and location of switches is completely different. More part images below, including one for the iPhone 5…

Photo of iPad 3 Dock Connector Leaks Online?

Apple.pro has posted a photo of what it claims is the dock connector and ribbon cable for the next iPad, reports MacRumors.

There are of course no guarantees that the part depicted in the photos is indeed a genuine dock connector for the iPad 3 as claimed, but the part carries a very similar form factor to the existing part and a part number updated from 821-1180-A in the iPad 2 to a newer 821-1259-06. The tail end of the ribbon cable also makes a 90-degree turn in the new part, whereas the iPad 2's dock connector ribbon cable is entirely straight.

The site observes that the purported part is white; whereas, the iPad 2's is black on all models. It suggests that perhaps the new white connector indicates a modified case design.

Rumors of a high resolution iPad 3 or iPad 2 HD have persisted for some time with many reports predicting a release later this year.

Apple to Add Second Manufacturer for the iPad 3?

Apple reportedly plans to add a second manufacturer for its iPad 3 in addition to Foxconn, according to DigiTimes.

The top contenders are said to be Quanta Computer and Pegatron Technology. Pegatron has already received orders for the iPhone 5 and may have a better chance of winning orders for the iPad 3.

Apple previously outsourced the production of iPad-series tablets to only Foxconn, which assembles the tablets mostly at its production base in Chengdu, western China. However, an explosion occurred at a Chengdu factory building on May 20 leaving three dead and 15 injured on May 20. The accident has forced Apple to seek a second contractor in order to minimize production risk.

The new iPad is set to be launched at the end of the third or beginning of the fourth quarter, according to the report.

Samsung demands to see the iPhone 4S/5 and the iPad 3

ThisIsMyNext posts some interesting news out of the Samsung camp. After Apple requested to see some of Samsung’s unreleased products (most of which were publicly released before the judge granted the motion), now Samsung is requesting to see some of Apple’s unreleased products. Namely the iPad 3 and the next iPhone whether it be the 4S or the iPhone 5. Obviously, very few people have seen these unannounced products.

Samsung claims that it needs to see Apple’s future products because devices like the Droid Charge and Galaxy Tab 10.1 will presumably be in the market at the same time as the iPhone 5 and iPad 3, and Samsung’s lawyers want to evaluate any possible similarities so they can prepare for further potential legal action from Apple. It’s ballsy, but it’s not totally out of the blue..
In the unlikely event that Samsung gets access to Apple’s products, it will only be Samsung’s legal team that gets to see the devices. Samsung’s manufacturing team probably already has some pretty good knowledge of the new products since they are bidding on/building some of the most important parts.

Nilay Patel, a former copyright attorney himself, thinks that this is a move to reignite negotiations between the companies. If that is true, Apple seems content to let the disagreements go to court and let a judge/jury decide.

I think it’s a calculated gamble for additional leverage. Apple and Samsung held negotiations for a year before giving up and heading to the courts, and I’m reliably informed that there haven’t been any substantive settlement discussions since Apple first filed its complaint. That means talks have been at a standstill for a long time now, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Samsung was trying to put some additional heat on Apple to try and kick negotiations back into gear. It’s an interesting and aggressive move in its own right, but it also highlights the fact that neither Apple nor Samsung have addressed the actual merits of their complaints in formal replies — this is a minor skirmish before the real battle begins. We’ll see if this sideshow accomplishes anything beyond clever lawyerly maneuvering, but for right now it’s clear that Apple and Samsung aren’t planning to back down anytime soon.
Still, it’s fun to watch the fireworks!

In my opinion it isn't likely that the court will grant samsung anything since it granted Apple the right to see all of Samsungs newest devices. If Apple sees any similarities they will be mentions in the trial and Samsungs devices will be stopped dead in it's tracks unless Apple agrees to a licensing of their patents to Samsung(which we this is extremely unlikely to happen).

iPad 2 shows up in the wilds of China

Look, not even the source of these images is absolutely certain that the device in his possession is a legitimate iPad 2, but we can't very well leave you spending your entire day anticipating Apple's new tablet launch without a potential candidate for what it might eventually look like. The above mockup has been procured over in China (where else?) and seems to tally closely with speculation we've been hearing about this hardware refresh -- namely, a slimmer profile, an almost entirely flat back, bigger speaker, and of course, rear- and front-facing cameras. We've looked into the digits on the back of the device and the model number is one for the original Apple TV while the FCC ID is for a WiFi-only iPad, but those could be mere placeholders on what is, once again, a mockup and not a real working tablet. The SIM card slot looks to have been repositioned to a slot that was once expected to house an SD card reader. Other tidbits of interest here include the 3G antenna, whose white cover is expected to be black on final units, and the sloped power button and headphone jack, bringing those witty "jumbo iPod touch" jokes to mind. iPad 2 Supply Could Be Limited Due to Issues With New Ultra-Thin Glass

Supplies of the new iPad could be limited at launch due to production issues with a new ultra-thin glass screen, according to AppleInsider.

Bill Shope with Goldman Sachs said in a note to investors this week that sources in Apple's overseas supply chain have indicated that the iPad 2 may be affected by production difficulties. These alleged problems could result in limited supply available at launch, for a surprising product availability that AppleInsider has heard could happen near immediately.

"It appears that Apple is once again pushing the technology envelope by making the device far thinner than the original iPad, and the iPad 2's ultra-thing glass screen is generating yield issues," the analyst wrote. "This appears to be more of a process problem as opposed to a technology problem, and we wouldn't be surprised to see volumes ramp fairly quickly as the process improves."

Last week a report claimed Apple shipments of the iPad 2 may have been delayed from April until June due to production bottlenecks at Hon Hai. This report was widely discredited by several sources including DigiTimes who said Apple has chosen to drop production volume targets to keep the tablet on schedule.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPad 2 at a special event on March 2nd.

White iPad 2 Bezel Gets Leaked? [Photos]

Photos of what appears to be white bezel for the iPad 2 have been leaked online by 9to5Mac and iFixYouri.

The piece that we have (from Shenzhen City), thanks to the folks at the iFixYouri iPhone repair shop, is the "digitizer" sometimes known as the the thick bezel.

If you look closely at the back of the part, below, you will see the camera hole, which happens to fit perfectly with the iPad 2 screen protectors from our friends in Asia. This is in addition to the ambient light sensor found on the top of the first-generation iPad. We don't know whether or not the new iPad will also come in a black finish but, we'll surely know all come March 2nd.

Apple is holding a special event on March 2nd at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts at 10:00 am where they will likely reveal the iPad 2.

iPad 2 Might Switch From Aluminum to Carbon Fiber Body?

There is a possibility that the iPad 2 might switch from an aluminum body to a lightweight high-strength carbon fiber body, according to Daring Fireball's John Gruber.

Yesterday, Gruber accused Engadget of trying to cover up an incorrect rumor article by saying that Apple was having "engineering issues" rather than admitting their source was wrong.

Eleventh hour, my ass. Nothing in these regards has changed in the iPad 2 since January. Nothing. There was never going to be a higher resolution display in the iPad 2. I’d wager heavily that there was never going to be an SD card slot for it, either, but I don’t know that.

In a footnote to his article, Gruber reports that Apple could be switching the iPad 2 from aluminum to carbon fiber; however, he says he's only half sure about that.

I could publish things I’m only half-sure about, like the iPad 2 switching from aluminum to a lightweight high-strength carbon fiber body, but I don’t, because I’m only half-sure and I’ve only heard about it from second-hand sources who themselves are unsure about it. And even if I were to off-handedly mention such speculation, I’d do so in a footnote and take pains to emphasize the uncertain nature of the information and the second-hand status of the sources thereof. What I would never do is take a flyer and report uncertain speculation as a fact, and, if it wound up not panning out, chalk it up to Apple having changed things at the last moment rather than the report being flat-out wrong all along.

Apple is expected to unveil the iPad 2 at their March 2nd special event.

Apple to Reveal iOS 5 Alongside iPad 2 at March 2nd Event?

Apple will reportedly reveal iOS 5 alongside a new A5 iPad 2 with 512MB of RAM at its March 2nd event, according to Engadget sources.

The iPad 2 won't get that SD card slot and Retina Display as previously rumored due to "engineering issues", say sources that have been "dead right" in the past.

That SD card slot and higher resolution display won't make it into the new model (the latter we'd been hearing rumblings about for a little while). What's the cause of the switch? Well our sources weren't crystal clear on the exact reasons, but the gist of what was explained to us centered around vague "engineering issues" which may have forced some changes at the eleventh hour.

Engadget reports that the iPad 2 will be thinner, feature the more powerful A5 CPU, 512MB of RAM, and a camera or two.

It's also almost guaranteed that we'll see the next version of iOS (number 5 in all likelihood, along with its SDK for devs), and an expansion of Apple's cloud services (that part is a little... foggy right now).

Apple Preps Yerba Buena for March 2nd Special Event [Photo]

Apple has started prepping the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts for next weeks iPad event. The event will be held on March 2nd at 10:00am.

Andrew Stern posted the photo below to his Twitter account.

Apple is expected announce an iPad that is thinner, lighter, features two cameras, an improved speaker, an anti-glare display, and the new Thunderbolt port.

FaceTime App for iPad Gets Leaked by Apple?

It looks like the FaceTime App released in iOS 4.3 beta 1 actually contains support for the iPad.

iPaDevice reader DjBeppee has figured out how to decrypt the files and get it running on the first generation iPad.

The app looks somewhat similar to the FaceTime application for Mac OS X. Check it out in the video and screenshots below.

A Majority of First Wave iPad 2S Will Be 3G Models

A majority of iPad 2s which are being produced for launch are GSM/UMTS or CDMA 3G capable, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of Concord Securities.

AppleInsider notes that Apple is expected to offer the new iPad in three versions: a WiFi only model, a GSM/UMTS version for AT&T and most other carriers globally, and a CDMA/EVDO model for Verizon (and possibly other CDMA carriers in the future). These versions are said to be code named K93, K94 and K95, respectively.

In speaking to AppleInsider, Kuo said his checks in the Far East indicate production figures of 38 percent for the K93 WiFi model, 46 percent of the K46 3G model, and 16 percent for the Verizon-compatible K95 CDMA version. This indicates that Apple apparently expects most iPad 2 users will opt for 3G models, even on Verizon where new iPhone buyers have the option to pay $20 for hotspot service through their new smartphone.
