iCloud Storage for MobileMe Customers Set to Expire in 2050?

Former MobileMe customers are noticing that their free additional 20GB of iCloud Storage is being set to expire in 2050, reports TUAW.

Twitter user @mgleet tipped me off that Apple appears to have bumped his iCloud storage plan to 25 GBs until the year 2050. Multiple people here at TUAW are seeing the same plan bumps, though none of us has upgraded our plans, not to mention paid 38 years in advance.

A week ago Apple sent an email to former MobileMe customers letting them know that their 25GB of cloud storage space will be reduced to 5GB unless they upgrade their iCloud. That downgrade was supposed to happen yesterday.

Are you seeing an expiration of 2050 on your additional iCloud storage?

I just checked and confirmed its true: my screenshot below:

iCloud launches October 12, iTunes Match end of October in the U.S., Find My Friends announced

Image via The Verge

Eddy Cue, Apple’s new iTunes/iCloud chief, has just one through a series of iCloud features at the company’s Cupertino, California campus. He covered the stuff Steve Jobs already explained during his WWDC keynote talk this past summer, including Documents in the Cloud, Photo Stream, iTunes in the Cloud and redownloading purchased content.

The Find My Phone feature which pinpoints a lost or stolen iOS device on the world map has been renamed simply Find My Devices, suggesting Macs will be added at some point, too. He also announced Find My Friends, a new service along those lines which displays location of friends on a map using location services from their iOS device. Eagled-eyed readers will remember 9to5Mac broke news of Find My Friends back in January 2011.

Some have already coined a new name for it: The iOS Latitude. Don’t worry, you have privacy controls at your disposal allowing you to set Location sharing to only happen during set periods of time and you can control with whom to share your location.

This will no doubt be the parents’ favorite. Find My Friends, as you may have guessed, will be provided as a brand new app for your iOS device. The iTunes Match service will go live at the end of October in the United States. Apple is working on enabling it internationally, Cue said. Surprisingly, Cue said that the iTunes Match streams music and stores in intelligently on the device. As you may recall, there has been some concern over whether the music-matching service streams or not.

The iCloud, which replaces the MobileMe (which in itself was an advanced version of .Mac) goes online for everyone October 12, just like the final shipping version of iOS 5.

iCloud wizard shows up in 10.7.2 Server

Reader Drew sent along these images of an iCloud setup wizard that came up after the latest 10.7.2 installation on Mac OS Server. We haven’t seen these before so we are posting:

It is notable that these appeared in Server rather than the client setup. This is likely what users who upgrade to 10.7.2 will see when they upgrade…as early as tomorrow. Two more wizard shots below:

Apple may allow users to merge iTunes, iCloud logins

A frustration for many users in the past is the fact that Apple IDs are currently not able to be merged. As Apple’s iOS 5 and iCloud near launch, Apple might be taking an important step to allow the merging of Apple IDs. iOS 5 includes several services such as iMessage, iCloud integration, Game Center, FaceTime, iTunes, the App Store, and iBooks.

Some users are frustrated because all of those services are spread across multiple Apple IDs. For example, some people have a separate Apple ID for iCloud (especially migrators from MobileMe) and for iTunes/App Store/iMessage/FaceTime, etc. According to an answer from Apple’s executive relations team, as reported by MacRumors, Apple could be readying a solution that merges all of a user’s Apple IDs:

Tim Cook about the issue, and quickly received a phone call from an Apple executive relations employee. She had spoken to the team responsible for Apple IDs and acknowledged that they understood the issue and that more people would run into the problem with iCloud. She also repeated that there is no way yet to combine accounts but revealed they are working on it. In the meantime, she recommended picking a single account to plan on keeping indefinitely and to make all future purchases on that account.
There you have it.?

Apple seeds OS X Lion 10.7.2 beta build 11C55 with iCloud to developers

Apple has seeded OS X Lion 10.7.2 build 11C55 to developers today, and it is the first OS X Lion 10.7.2 build to include iCloud for Mac built-in. Previously, developers had to download a separate iCloud for Mac package.

OS X Lion Software Update 10.7.2 is an update to OS X Lion 10.7 and includes support for iCloud beta. Please refer to the seed note for more details and installation instructions. (Mac Developer Program membership is required)
OS X Lion 10.7.2 includes the ability for users to easily enable iCloud Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and Find my Mac on their computers. The software release will most likely ship alongside iCloud sometime this fall. Apple’s iCloud service is seemingly almost ready to launch with both Apple and carriers (for the iOS 5 integration) already being trained on the matter.

Deutsche Telekom confirms iPhone 5 reservations Christian Zibreg Apple InciOS Devices no comments September 5, 2011 at 4:59 am German-language Focus.de is reporting (Google translation) that T-Mobile customers in the country are now allowed to reserve Apple’s unreleased handset, the iPhone 5, since this morning. The iPhoneblog.de first broke the story and 9to5Mac has also received several tips from our readers confirming that the Deutsche Telekom-owned wireless operators has in fact begun issuing so-called Premieren Ticket. These are basically support tickets – one per customer – for early adopters and informed buyers who couldn’t be otherwise convinced into buying the existing iPhone 4 or iPhone 3GS. Those coupons will eventually let folks claim their handset, when it arrives, on a first-come-first-served basis. Only the carrier’s customers are eligible and only upon contacting sales representatives in one of the carrier-owned brick-and-mortar stores or by calling customer support. As you could imagine, Deutsche Telekom is pretty low-key about the initiative and thus shuns from advertising it apart from a rather cryptic hint on their website. Shortly after the report was published, Bloomberg was able to verify it with a company spokesperson, who said: Deutsche Telekom AG (DTE) will allow customers to reserve the next generation of Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone as of today in anticipation of supply bottlenecks for the device, spokesman Alexander von Schmettow said by phone. The operator will hand out coupons to people who expressly request the successor model to the iPhone 4, without providing the name or release details of the device, he said. Hints have been multiplying since last week that Apple could be close to unveiling a fifth-generation iPhone. Apple store employees have received their iOS 5 and iCloud training material and internal Best Buy documents have pointed to a Sprint iPhone 5 launch in the first week of October. Both nuggets confirm 9to5Mac’s discovery from July that Sprint would get iPhone 5, based on an April job posting seeking cellular engineers in the Kansas City region, right in the neighborhood of Sprint’s headquarters. 9to5Mac also originally broke the news that Apple would begin accepting iPhone 5 pre-orders in early September, gearing up for an early October launch. Also… …This past Saturday, Japanese blog Macotakara wrote (Google translation) that contract manufacturers Pegatron Technology and Foxconn have begun assembling iPhone 5 at a rate of 85 percent and 15 percent, respectively. The blog notes that the units are not yet being packaged in boxes until Apple iOS 5 is ready for prime time. With so much clues out in the open, it’s safe to assume that invites for an Apple media event are ready and that it is now up to Apple’s marketing and CEO Tim Cook to hit the Launch button.

Apple Stores begin iCloud and iOS 5 training, may hint at imminent launch

Internal iCloud training

As Apple’s yet-to-be-made-official fall festivities approach, we’ve heard that Apple has begun iOS 5 and iCloud training with retail store employees. According to these sources, training is done through a new section inside of the company’s recently released internal RetailMe application.

Apple typically rolls out their major iOS releases in the days surrounding new iPhone launches. Apple Stores usually only begin their training of new software in the couple of weeks leading up to a respective product launch (obviously this time around could be different, though). Apple beginning their iOS 5 training within the last few days could mean a launch sooner than the recently rumored dates of mid-to-late October.

In addition to iOS 5, Apple Store employees have also begun receiving detailed information on Apple’s upcoming iCloud service. Apple originally said iCloud would be launching alongside iOS 5, which is necessary because of iCloud’s full integration into the next-generation iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV operating system.

If anything, this iOS 5 and iCloud training news helps support our original report of late September iPhone 5 pre-orders and an early October launch. Evidence that Apple is nearing completion of their iCloud service is a pickup of iCloud for Mac and Mac OS 10.7.2 betas to developers. In addition, Apple’s recent betas of iOS 5 have certainly focused on performance, speed, and the removal of bugs.

Apple releases iTunes 10.5 beta 6.1 to developers, features iTunes Match beta

Developers, get downloading! Apple has just begun seeding iTunes 10.5 beta 6.1 to developers, which features iTunes Match. This is the first time developers will be able to get their hands on the new cloud platform, announced by Apple at WWDC in June. The beta is available in the United States, and still has the $24.99 subscription cost with it. Apple sent the following email to developers seen after the break.

Apple warns that what is uploaded to iCloud will be deleted at the end of the beta period. Also, Apple wants to thank developers of their service with a free beta period and an additional free three months with their 12 months purchase.

For your perusal, we’ve included the release notes after the break:

Ah! The limit has been reached!

Thanks Mike, Matt!

Backup regularly and do not delete the music you add to iCloud from your computer. Apple
may periodically delete all iCloud libraries during the beta period. This will require you to scan,
match, and upload songs again. Also note that some of the features and optimizations of
iTunes Match may not be available during this beta.
About Subscribing
iTunes Match beta is available to iOS developers in the United States.
• iTunes Match beta is available as an automatically renewing 12 month subscription for
$24.99 per year. You may cancel at any time from your Account settings.
• To thank you for your participation, beta subscribers will receive the beta period and an
additional 3 months of service with their 12 month subscription.
• You can subscribe to iTunes Match using iTunes 10.5 beta on your Mac. iTunes Match is
not available with iTunes for Windows at this time. You cannot subscribe to iTunes
Match from your iOS device.
• You can access your iCloud library on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch with iOS 5 beta, or
your other computers with iTunes 10.5 beta.
• Once subscribed, you can add up to 25,000 songs to iCloud, and iTunes purchases do
not count against this limit. iTunes Match will not add your apps, books, movies, TV
shows, ringtones, and audiobooks to your iCloud library. These items can continue to be
synced to your iOS device with iTunes. iTunes LPs and iTunes Extras are also
unsupported.
• iTunes Match includes limits to how you may access your iCloud library:
- You can use iTunes Match on up to 10 computers and iOS devices, up to five of
which can be computers authorized with your Apple ID.
- You can only associate computers and devices with a different Apple ID once every
90 days.
Getting Started
Important: Before you get started, it is recommended you make a backup of your complete
iTunes library. You can find your iTunes library inside /Music/iTunes in your Home folder.
To subscribe to iTunes Match:
1. Install iTunes 10.5 beta 6.1 or later on your Mac.
2. Open iTunes and choose Turn On iTunes Match from the Store menu.
3. Click the Subscribe for $24.99 button and follow the onscreen instructions. Once
complete, your Music library will include songs on your computer and in iCloud.
Once iTunes has completed matching your music with the iTunes Store, you may begin
accessing your iCloud library:
• From your iOS device:
1. Tap Settings > Music > turn iTunes Match ON.
This will disable syncing music with iTunes.
2. Press the Home button and tap Music.
• From your other computers:
1. Install iTunes 10.5 beta on your other Macs
2. Open iTunes and choose Store > Sign In. Sign in using the same Apple ID you used
to subscribe to iTunes Match.
3. Choose Store > Turn On iTunes Match
4. Click the Add this Computer button
5. Once complete, your Music library will include songs on your computer and in
iCloud.
Known Issues
• Songs in unsupported formats will not be uploaded to iCloud at this time.
• Some songs that are available in the iTunes store may not be matched correctly.
• Some songs may match to a different version of the same song on the iTunes Store.
• You will not be able to add music to iCloud from more than one computer at a time.
• You may experience playback issues on iOS, such as slow performance, incorrect track
playing, or songs being shown as unavailable when they are available.
• Playback over cellular data connection will occur when Wi-Fi is not available, despite
this option being turned off in Settings > Store

MobileMe users keep their 20GB of storage in iCloud transition, start iCloud with 25GB

Users who migrate from MobileMe to iCloud will retain their 20GB of yearly storage when the service launches sometime this fall. All individual MobileMe accounts included 20GB of storage per year, leading some users to be concerned about iCloud base storage of 5GB. These users should not fear, though, as Apple is letting users keep the 20GB of MobileMe storage and is adding it to the 5GB that already come with iCloud. Furthermore, users who migrate from MobileMe will get 25GB of iCloud storage from the start, and will not have to worry about paying an extra fee.

Apple Enables MobileMe to iCloud Migration for Developers

Apple is now allowing developers to migrate their MobileMe accounts to iCloud. Those developers want to give it a try should sign in to MobileMe then navigate to http://www.me.com/move.

Your email addresses, your mail and calendars will be copied from MobileMe to iCloud. Contacts and bookmarks will be copied from your devices. Shared calendars may be affected by moving.

You will be able to continue using MobileMe Gallery, iDisk, and iWeb publishing at me.com and on your devices until June 30,2012, even after moving to iCloud.

You will no longer be able to sync Mac Dashboard Widgets, Dock Items, Keychains, Mail Accounts, Rules, Signatures, Smart Mailboxes, and Preferences after moving to iCloud.

iOS devices must be running iOS 5 beta 5, Macs must be running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 Seed and iCloud for OS X Lion beta 6. PCs must be running Windows Vista or later, Outlook 2007 or later and iCloud Control Panel for Windows beta 4.

Lastly backup your contacts, calendars and bookmarks before moving.

Apple posts iCloud transition FAQ; Mail, Contacts, Calendar and Find my iPhone web apps stay

Apple has posted a new web page that is dedicated to answering frequently asked questions about the transition from MobileMe to Apple’s new iCloud service, which launches this fall (via TechCrunch). The webpage explains which services are staying with iCloud and which are going (shown in image above). Those are in addition to these new services:

iTunes in the Cloud
Photo Stream
Documents in the Cloud
Automatic downloads and purchase history for apps and books
Backup and restore
The site also says that users will be able to migrate their current .Mac or MobileMe username to the iCloud service. A big question as of late has been over whether or not iCloud will include functionality in the browser; Apple answers:

Yes. Web access to iCloud Mail, Contacts, Calendar, and Find My iPhone will be available at icloud.com this fall.

Current MobileMe services such as iDisk, Web Gallery, Mac-based sync services, and iWeb published websites will still be supported, for current MobileMe and .Mac (where applicable) users, until June 30, 2012. New iCloud users, which can sign up for a free Me.com account as a part of iCloud, will not be able to access those features.

MobileMe is dead, here’s what you need to know

Apple has unveiled the new iCloud service at a morning keynote which kicked off the WWDC 2011 show. The new product actually retires Apple’s $99 a year MobileMe services suite. If you’re among a couple of hundred thousand subscribers, you may wanna check out a new support document outlining things to know as this transition takes place. The document reads,

Effective June 6, 2011, if you had an active MobileMe account, your service has been automatically extended through June 30, 2012, at no additional charge. After this, the MobileMe service will no longer be available.
There are a couple things you should be aware of…

Following the transition, all your MobileMe mail, contacts and calendars will be moved to iCloud and you will retain your me.com or mac.com email address, Apple promises. MobileMe Family Packs and storage upgrades will cease to exist after today. Additionally, you can no longer create a new MobileMe account or start a two-month trial after June 6, 2011. People with unused activation codes obtained with a MobileMe box purchase can submit a refund request here.

WWDC 2011 Apple’s Jobs unveils iTunes music locker in the cloud

With necessary licensing agreements from major music publishers in his pocket, Steve Jobs has taken the wraps off of the new feature that lets you re-download music purchases at no cost, via the iTunes Store app on iOS devices. “For the songs you’ve already bought, we’ve added a purchased button”, Jobs explained. This new section of the iTunes app conveniently lists all your music purchases in one place. From there, tap the cloud icon to download the already purchased track for free.

Your other choice is the automatic downloading feature that grabs your purchases, including free ones, made on your other devices. “This is the first time we’ve seen this in the music industry – no charge for multiple downloads to different devices”, Jobs said. But what about music you already own, which didn’t come from iTunes? And what about that rumored scan and match stuff?

“One, you can sync your devices over Wi-Fi or cable, and then you can rely on iCloud. Or, if it’s just a few songs you love, you can buy them on iTunes. But we’re offering a third way, and we call it iTunes Match“, he explained. Unlike similar offerings from Amazon and Google, the scan-and-match feature fingerprints your music and makes matching tracks instantly available in the cloud for streaming to your authorized computers and mobile devices, without the need to upload tracks. This will cost you 25 a year. Also important, iTunes Match will “upgrade the songs to 256k AAC DRM free”. Check out our complete WWDC 2011 coverage and follow us @limerain_com as we update you on the latest news from San Francisco.
