Leaked Microsoft Video Parodies Google Chrome Ad

An internal Microsoft 'Scroogled' video targeting Google Chrome has been leaked online.

The video parodies Google's Chrome ads by following a bouncing ball that shows how Google targets you everywhere with ads. It's features the same music and style as the Chrome "Now Everywhere" ad.

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to The Verge that the ad is genuine, stating it's "an internal video that was leaked."

Samsung Agrees to Pay Microsoft for Using Android

Microsoft announced today that it has signed a definitive agreement with Samsung, to cross-license the patent portfolios of both companies, providing broad coverage for each company's products. Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will receive royalties for Samsung's mobile phones and tablets running the Android mobile platform. In addition, the companies agreed to cooperate in the development and marketing of Windows Phone.

"Microsoft and Samsung see the opportunity for dramatic growth in Windows Phone and we're investing to make that a reality," said Andy Lees, president, Windows Phone Division, Microsoft. "Microsoft believes in a model where all our partners can grow and profit based on our platform."

"Through the cross-licensing of our respective patent portfolios, Samsung and Microsoft can continue to bring the latest innovations to the mobile industry," said Dr. Won-Pyo Hong, executive vice president of global product strategy at Samsung's mobile communication division. "We are pleased to build upon our long history of working together to open a new chapter of collaboration beginning with our Windows Phone "Mango" launch this fall."

FOSS Patents notes that "This is the most important Android-related intellectual property deal in its own right, and even more significant against the background of Google's proposed acquisition of Motorola Mobility. If Samsung truly believed that Google's acquisition of Motorola Mobility was going to be helpful to the Android ecosystem at large, it would have waited until that deal is closed before concluding the license agreement with Microsoft. But Samsung probably knows it can't rely on Google. It decided to address Android's intellectual property issues on its own."

Interestingly, it appears that Samsung was able to negotiate a lower licensing fee by promising to work with Microsoft to promote Windows Phone 7. Microsoft's mobile operating system has received good reviews but has seen low adoption rates and the company working hard to negotiate deals with manufacturers to push the OS.

Windows 8 Metro Browser Will Not Support Flash or Any Other Plugins

Microsoft has announced that the Metro style browser in Windows 8 will not support Flash or any other plugins.

The Metro style browser in Windows 8 is as HTML5-only as possible, and plug-in free. The experience that plug-ins provide today is not a good match with Metro style browsing and the modern HTML5 web.

Running Metro style IE plug-in free improves battery life as well as security, reliability, and privacy for consumers. Plug-ins were important early on in the web's history. But the web has come a long way since then with HTML5. Providing compatibility with legacy plug-in technologies would detract from, rather than improve, the consumer experience of browsing in the Metro style UI.

It took everyone this long to realize that Apple was right all along? Now even Microsoft built a device and web browser only for HTML5. Well I'll be dammed, I guess Apple was right!

Motorola's Threats Against Android Drove Google Acquisition?

Google's purchase of Motorola may have been driven by Motorola threats against Android, reports FOSS Patents.

Google offered $12.5 billion for Motorola, a 60% premium, not because it needed the company's patents but because it wanted to prevent Motorola from taking four actions that would have seriously damaged Android.

This wasn't about MMI telling Google: "buy us, and together we'll protect the Android ecosystem". This was more like MMI telling Google: "buy us, or else we'll immediately do three or four things that will make sense for us but be absolutely devastating for Android".

The four things Motorola reportedly planed to do were:

1. MMI would have taken a royalty-bearing patent license from Microsoft, and possibly also settled with Apple.

2. MMI would have revisited its exclusive focus on Android and possibly adopted Windows Phone.

3. MMI would have attacked other Android device makers with its patents to make their products more expensive.

4. MMI would have conducted a public or private auction of the entire company or large parts of its patent portfolio.

FOSS Patents concludes that "the $12.5 billion price represents protection money. But not in the way most people seem to think."

Hit this link for a much more detailed analysis.

Samsung targets iOS devices in France as Apple puts brakes on Motorola until Google merger is completed

This is a Samsung-branded Windows 8 tablet Microsoft is giving away to BUILD attendees today.

The latest in the ongoing patent saga involving Apple, Google, Motorola and Samsung includes an unexpected twist as Samsung goes after iPhone and iPad with a complaint filed before a Paris district court in July. The filing alleges infringement of Samsung’s three technology patents, reports AFP. The first hearing is expected in December of this year.

Meanwhile, patent expert Florian Müller notes on his blog FOSSPatents that Apple has filed motions to temporarily halt two Motorola lawsuits until Google completes its $12.5 billion acquisition, which shook the technology world last month. Put simply, Apple argues Motorola waived its rights to sue when it transferred patents to Google. Apple wrote:

To further its pending acquisition by Google, Motorola has surrendered critical rights in the patents-in-suit, such that Motorola no longer has prudential standing to pursue this action. According to the publicly-filed Merger Agreement, Motorola has ceded control of the most basic rights regarding the patents-in-suit
As you know, Google has transferred some of the Motorola patents to HTC, in addition to the ones acquired from Palm and Openwave Systems. HTC then used those patents to counter-sue Apple. Back to Apple vs. Samsung…

Financial Times today opined that Samsung needs to hit the reset button, predicting a licensing agreement of sorts provided Apple succeeds in blocking Galaxy products in the U.S. next month. Contrary to the reports, the publication thinks “Apple is restricted from taking its chip business to Samsung’s rivals in Taiwan because Samsung offers a complete package of components that other firms cannot match”. However, there are indications that Apple’s been lowering Samsung orders for some time and it’s widely believed the company is eager to take its silicon business to TSMC beginning next year.

Windows Explorer 8: What happens when you can’t say no

Techcrunch points us to this amusing Microsoft blog post articulating the decision to put just about every possible item in the future Windows Explorer 8 bar.

This is clearly an example of trying to put everything somewhere with no regard for clutter or usability or design. It is hard to imagine a better example of why Apple’s ability to say no to extraneous features is better for usage.

Browser shootout Lion Hackintosh versus Windows 7

In a comprehensive shootout by Tom’s Hardware, Safari 5.1 on Windows 7 edged other browsers in two out of three GUIMark2 Flash tests

While some folks feared the 2GB of memory requirement meant an added bloat in Mac OS X Lion, many fans were pleasantly surprised seeing their Lion system perform faster and zip through daily tasks smoother compared to their previous Leopard or Snow Leopard installations. But how does Lion fare against Windows 7 in web-based tasks, including page loading times and common technologies such as Adobe’s Flash, HTML5 web apps and WebGL-accelerated graphics?

Tom’s Hardware set out to figure out the answer to that. They put both operating systems through their paces in a series of tests run on the same hardware, so Lion was running on a PC machine rather than an Apple-branded Mac. The tests were conducted using the latest platform-specific builds of Chrome 13, Firefox 6 and Safari 5.1 for OS X Lion and Windows 7.

Overall, Chrome wins by a slim margin. However, Lion’s Safari running on a Hackintosh matched or beat the best score from Windows-based browsers in 10 out of 29 scored tests, leading author Adam Olivera to write:

On its native platform, Safari is definitely no slouch. In fact, the performance of Safari 5.1 in OS X Lion matches that of Firefox 6 in Windows 7. Mac OS X Lion is a beauty to behold, and its benefits aren’t just skin-deep. The score for Safari 5.1 on OS X is really close to Chrome 13 running on Windows 7, and it might even beat Firefox 6 for Windows. So, if you throw Safari 5.1 for OS X into the regular Windows 7 mix, Apple takes or shares second place.
Analysis tables for both Windows 7 and OS X Lion are right below the fold. Note: Benchmarks are just benchmarks and often not representative of real-world performances. One such benchmark, for example, painted Windows Phone 7′s browser as being much faster than Safari in iOS – even though the results alter drastically with Safari’s Nitro engine in the picture. With that in mind, Olivera also wrote that a Hackintosh fared better in Flash, HTML5, WebGL and page load times than Windows 7:

Forbes: Apple is fifth most innovative company, Google is #7 Don’t even ask about Microsoft.

Forbes has put together (via setteB.IT) a list of the World’s Most Innovative Companies and Apple ranked fifth. Salesforce.com leads the pack, followed by Amazon (#2), Intuitive Surgical (#3) and Tencent Holdings (#4). Interestingly, Google is seventh most-innovative company in the world on the publication’s list. Other worthy mentions: Nintendo (#20), Activision Blizzard (#22), Starbucks (#19), PepsiCo (#50). The usual suspects don’t fare well, however. Adobe is ranked 54th (little wonder, with their confused CEO) and Apple’s court friend HTC is 56th. Steve Jobs best friend’s company Oracle is 77th and Microsoft is far down on the list, ranked 86th. The full list is available here. But wait, how do you measure innovation? Read on…

Forbes calls it the five skills of disruptive innovators and here they are:

Questioning allows innovators to challenge the status quo and consider new possibilities; Observing helps innovators detect small details—in the activities of customers, suppliers and other companies—that suggest new ways of doing things Networking permits innovators to gain radically different perspectives from individuals with diverse backgrounds; Experimenting prompts innovators to relentlessly try out new experiences, take things apart and test new ideas; Associational thinking—drawing connections among questions, problems or ideas from unrelated fields—is triggered by questioning, observing, networking and experimenting and is the catalyst for creative ideas.
That, and the usual stuff to consider such as sales, profitability, growth, market share, hype and other tangibles and intangibles.

comScore: iPhone continues to gain ground even without a refresh

While Google passed the 40% smartphone share (Microsoft must be happy!) in the US threshold, Apple continues to outpace the industry as a whole posting modest 1 point gains in the US smartphone category according to comScore. Apple moved up from 25.5% in March to 26.6% in June on the year old iPhone 4 model which also saw its US debut on Verizon.

Apple also moved up in the hardware category, below:

Apple outpaces Samsung and LG for the quarter at the expense of Motorola and RIM. No shocker there.

Google: Apple attempting to “strangle” Android rather than build new features, devices

Google Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer David Drummond has written an open letter to Apple and others (namely Microsoft) for the latest trend of going after smartphone patents by buying up others companies patents. Drummond notes that Apple and Microsoft “have always been at each other’s throats” and “when they get into bed together you have to start wondering what’s going on.” Google’s Drummond is referring to the two technology heavyweights “banding” together to win the Novell and Nortel’s old smartphone related patents. As revealed just a few weeks ago, a Consortium of Apple, Microsoft, and Oracle payed $4.5 billion for the aforementioned Nortell patents.

Drummond outright calls this “a hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents.” Drummond also says that the approach to acquire patents and file patent lawsuits is Apple’s (and others’) way of showing that they “want to make it harder for manufacturers to sell Android devices.” He also says that Apple and others are going after these patents and filing complaints “instead of competing by building new features or devices.”

Drummond also says that Google feels that Apple and Microsoft’s take over of the Nortel patents is unlawful:

Fortunately, the law frowns on the accumulation of dubious patents for anti-competitive means — which means these deals are likely to draw regulatory scrutiny, and this patent bubble will pop.
Drummond ends by saying that Apple and Microsoft’s moves could potentially hurt Android and they are obviously looking into ways to stop this.

Unless we act, consumers could face rising costs for Android devices — and fewer choices for their next phone.

I have worked in the tech sector for over two decades. Microsoft and Apple have always been at each other’s throats, so when they get into bed together you have to start wondering what’s going on. Here is what’s happening:

Android is on fire. More than 550,000 Android devices are activated every day, through a network of 39 manufacturers and 231 carriers. Android and other platforms are competing hard against each other, and that’s yielding cool new devices and amazing mobile apps for consumers.

But Android’s success has yielded something else: a hostile, organized campaign against Android by Microsoft, Oracle, Apple and other companies, waged through bogus patents.

They’re doing this by banding together to acquire Novell’s old patents (the “CPTN” group including Microsoft and Apple) and Nortel’s old patents (the “Rockstar” group including Microsoft and Apple), to make sure Google didn’t get them; seeking $15 licensing fees for every Android device; attempting to make it more expensive for phone manufacturers to license Android (which we provide free of charge) than Windows Mobile; and even suing Barnes & Noble, HTC, Motorola, and Samsung. Patents were meant to encourage innovation, but lately they are being used as a weapon to stop it.

A smartphone might involve as many as 250,000 (largely questionable) patent claims, and our competitors want to impose a “tax” for these dubious patents that makes Android devices more expensive for consumers. They want to make it harder for manufacturers to sell Android devices. Instead of competing by building new features or devices, they are fighting through litigation.

This anti-competitive strategy is also escalating the cost of patents way beyond what they’re really worth. Microsoft and Apple’s winning $4.5 billion for Nortel’s patent portfolio was nearly five times larger than the pre-auction estimate of $1 billion. Fortunately, the law frowns on the accumulation of dubious patents for anti-competitive means — which means these deals are likely to draw regulatory scrutiny, and this patent bubble will pop.

We’re not naive; technology is a tough and ever-changing industry and we work very hard to stay focused on our own business and make better products. But in this instance we thought it was important to speak out and make it clear that we’re determined to preserve Android as a competitive choice for consumers, by stopping those who are trying to strangle it.

We’re looking intensely at a number of ways to do that. We’re encouraged that the Department of Justice forced the group I mentioned earlier to license the former Novell patents on fair terms, and that it’s looking into whether Microsoft and Apple acquired the Nortel patents for anti-competitive means. We’re also looking at other ways to reduce the anti-competitive threats against Android by strengthening our own patent portfolio. Unless we act, consumers could face rising costs for Android devices — and fewer choices for their next phone.

*thanks 9to5mac*

Well sorry to say this however googles crying like a 5yr old who took someone else's cellphone and has been using it and not paying the bill. If you can't make your own innovations then don't make anything! If you have to use other companies patents without licensing them then don't cry when it comes back to bite you in the backside! Google need to hire more people and create something more original, not just copy other people/companies ideas, and just slap a different look on it hoping they won't relies what google did.

Apple Created the Rockstar Group After They Dropped Out of Nortel Auction

A consortium of companies including Apple won the auction for Nortel's patents; however, Apple originally went into the auction alone. Only after Rockstar Bidco (RIM, EMC, Ericsson, Sony, Microsoft) dropped out of the bidding did Apple form a partnership to stake the group, according to TechCrunch.

By the fifth round of bidding, it was Rockstar Bidco that decided not to submit a bid. This brought the group of bidders down to three: Google, Apple, and Intel. Then something really interesting happened.

Following Rockstar's seeming exit, Apple asked Nortel for permission to talk to the group about a possible partnership. This request was granted. Following these discussions, Apple decided they wanted to partner with Rockstar and adopt their name and transaction structure. Essentially, Apple decided to stake the Rockstar group in this high-stakes poker game.

Eventually, Intel dropped out and partnered with Google; however, in the 19th round Apple's group was able to win with a bid of $4.5 billion.

Microsoft vs. Apple The History of Computing InfoGraphic

Manolution has published an incredibly detailed timeline of events and stock prices throughout the historic battle between Microsoft and Apple.

Despite maintaining dominance of the OS market for over three decades, Microsoft’s stocks continue to trade at or below their first ever public value of $27.50 (at closing on 3/13/1986).

Thanks to Apple’s extremely successful ventures into various hand-held gadget markets (namely the iPod, iPhone and iPad) Apple’s stock continues to rise, trading at over $300 more than that of Microsoft’s as of 6/6/2011.

Manolution predicts the gap in stock pricing between the two companies will continue to grow for the foreseeable future.

Nvidia CEO: Expect tablets to beat your computer to the Intel CPU punch in five years

Nvidia’s boss Huang Jen-Hsun certainly knows a thing or two about tablets and the semiconductor industry. His company’s Tegra-branded chips have risen in a short period of time as the go-to silicon for mobile devices, even though Tegra processors don’t power the one tablet to rule them all.

That said, if the Shadowgun game demo is an indication (video below), current-generation Tegra 2 packs in some impressive oomph in the graphics department (yes, Shadowgun is also coming to an iPhone and iPad near you). Chatting with journalists at Computex, the CEO boldly predicted that tablets would outperform PCs five years from now…

You will not credit Intel for such an important feat, but Nvidia and its processors of the future, he argued. This won’t sit well with the Intel camp. The leading chip maker has unleashed a barrage of announcements at the Computex show yesterday, arguing they are the force to be reckoned with in the mobile arena. Meanwhile, Nvidia is talking numbers. In June, boss said, the company will have sold its tenth million Tegra chip. Even though Apple pushed out Nvidia chips from MacBooks and iMacs, Jen-Hsun isn’t the one to shy away from praising Apple’s best-selling iPad. At the same time, he has been promoting the five times performance increase and graphical prowess of the upcoming Tegra 3 tablets, which are expected to hit the market in a few months.

iPad to send Windows into negative growth for the first time ever?

SAI:

Microsoft’s consumer PC sales growth has pretty much never declined. Not even when Microsoft released Vista. Not even when the economy went in the toilet. But suddenly, the growth of sales is about to go negative, says Citi analyst Walter Pritchard.
If Windows starts to decline in numbers, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer might actually be in trouble. If things weren’t bad enough, Microsoft also has to contend with a ChromeOS from Google and maybe even some ARM powered laptops from Apple.

*thanks 9to5Mac*

This is why Microsoft is giving away xbox360 with any windows 7 pc purchase of $699.99 or more, more details here.

Apple to Announce Back-To-School Special at WWDC? iPad Discount?

Apple will reportedly announce its Back-to-School special at WWDC which will bundle a free iPod touch or possibly a $200 iPad discount with the purchase of a Mac.

One of our Apple sources has informed us that they’ve been hearing Apple’s yearly back-to-school special will be announced at WWDC next month. We have been told Apple will continue to offer educational discounts on computers and either a free iPod touch, or $229 towards the purchase of any other iPod. Our source also let us know that there might be something new in the works, as well… they heard that it’s possible Apple might offer students up to $200 off an iPad with the purchase of a new Mac. If true, this would be pretty great deal.

*thanks iclarified*

You can see how this along with amazing iPad sales are destroying Microsoft and windows sales. Microsoft didn't want to feel left out and came out with their own promo for students, buy a windows 7 pc and get a xbox360 free and it can be seen here.

Microsoft to buy Skype for $8.5B, two slow companies to get slower

This is the kind of deal that you know is bound to fail in the long run. Skype is treading water, having just released a horrific Mac update to its chat software but building passable software on iOS as well as other platforms. Its major problem is that its innovation has slowed to a crawl since being picked up by eBay.

Which segues nicely to Microsoft, who is clumsily making purchases to cover its lack of innovation. Instead of building a VoIP service for its Windows Live Messenger, they are scooping up Skype’s huge user base of users for a lot of money -$7B if the WSJ is correct. Probably too much for a company that isn’t innovating and relying on old technology for its revenues. Speaking of Revenues, Skype’s plan is to start advertising in its chat window if its IPO prospectus is to be believed.

A Skype purchase will kill innovation (what’s left of it anyway) in the Skype product as it gets integrated with Windows Messenger/Live Communications probably long enough for Facebook and Google (and even Apple) to render it useless with their own VoIP products.

But, one thing will stay constant. Skype has always been behind on its Mac versions. Look for Microsoft to continue that trend as it is their sweet spot (see Office or anything really).

Best reactions from around the web:

“Microsoft buying Skype for over $7 billion isn’t the craziest thing I’ve heard, but it’s damn close.” Nilay Patel

“Everyone jump on Skype” is about to become “Everyone jump on Microsoft P2P VoIP client for Windows Live Communications 7 Home/Pro/Ult” :-/ – Rene Ritchie

So Microsoft is paying $7 billion to lose even more money online each quarter. Makes perfect sense. – MG Siegler

Two turds don’t make an Eagle – Vic Gundotra

Updated to $8.5B per Kara Swisher with an announce today.

Paul Allen calls Apple’s success “unbelievable”, takes jab at Microsoft and Bill Gates

Paul Allen owns a megayacht named Octoups, seen above (please, no 007 jokes).

Paul Allen, the 58-year-old co-founding Microsoft billionaire, is on a roll again. He’s giving eyebrow-raising interviews left and right clearly meant to impress and inspire Apple fans and Microsoft haters. It’s a calculated move for a very prosaic reason – tomorrow sees the launch of The Idea Man, a memoir supposedly filled with dirty secrets about his complex business dealings with Bill Gates and Microsoft.

He first sat down with 60 Minutes’ Lesley Stahl and then did an interview with Wired’s Sam Gustin and other media outlets. Working with Bill Gates was like “being in hell,” he quipped. Microsoft “needs to accelerate the pace of product development” to better compete with Apple and Google, he said, the two firms with which he’s locked in an intellectual property dispute. “Unbelievable” is how he described Apple’s turnaround before launching into this Steve Jobs appraisal:

What he’s done with the iPod, the iPhone and the iPad – what a triple play there.
For more, watch a clip from the CBS interview right below the fold.

Gates and Allen used to engage in heated discussions that took a turn for the worse. Gates would call him names in front of other employees, Allen revealed in his book. The growing anxiety and anger and Stage 4 lymphoma he had been diagnosed with had ultimately led to his exit from the company in 1983 and resignation from the board in 2000. Allen owns the Octopus megayacht (pictured above), two professional sports teams, the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League and the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association, plus a whole bunch of expensive high-tech toys. Forbes says he’s seventeenth wealthiest American with an estimated net worth of $13 billion.

Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 1 now available

Just as Microsoft promised last week, the first major service pack for Office for Mac 2011 is now available. Go to any Office application on your Mac and choose Check for Updates from the Help menu or grab a standalone installer from the Office for Mac website. The 246MB download “fixes critical issues and also helps to improve security,” the release notes say.

Also, it includes fixes for “vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of your computer’s memory with malicious code.” It will also improve the speed and stability. There are several new features as well…

New features and enhancements include support for Exchange based server-side rules and editing of existing messages in Outlook.

You can also redirect the message to a person with the replies delivered to the original sender in Outlook and resend the message.

The much-needed calendar syncing is another welcome addition.
