Apple Launches Its 100th iAd Campaign

Apple has launched its 100th iAd campaign with real estate company Coldwell Banker, according to The Loop.

The iAd focuses on helping consumers find a home for sale that meets their needs right within the iAd unit. Consumers can call an agent right from the ad to get more details on a property.

"We know that mobile marketing is critical to the future of our consumer engagement," said Michael Fischer, chief marketing officer for Coldwell Banker Real Estate. "The iAd platform and its unique custom targeting allows us to engage with consumers like no other mobile advertisement can. We go way beyond banner ads and search terms to offer an informative and entertaining custom home search tool. With iAd, Coldwell Banker essentially becomes a positive part of the user’s overall app experience."

The Loop says the Coldwell Banker ad is getting good results with the 11 pages viewed per visit, average user engagement time of more than one minute, tap rates 5x higher than online banners, and conversation rates 4x higher.

You can take a look at some screenshots of the iAd below...

iAds Gallery is an idea borrowed

Here’s a video from June 2010:

Her app was of course rejected by Apple. You’ll recall that Apple just a few days ago took this idea and ran with it with their iAds Gallery. Fair?

Forget the content and get right to ads with iAd Gallery app

This is no April Fool’s Day Joke or Onion article…. Today, Apple released the iAd gallery app which is just a bunch of ads in a gallery. Yep, that’s it.

Great ads. On-demand. In your pocket. The iAd Gallery is a celebration of advertising, featuring iAd campaigns from some of the world’s best brands and their advertising agencies. The iAd Gallery gives you easy access to a selection of the fun and informative ads that have run in some of your favorite apps. Use the Browse feature to discover ads you haven’t seen, or to find those you want to see again. Even lets you tag your favorites to a Loved section that’s all your own.
Features:

• Updated regularly to include a selection of the latest ads running on the iAd Network
• Explore by spinning the wheel of iAd banners, or search by advertiser, category or ad feature
• Learn about the featured ads, including the advertising agencies behind them
• Easily access your favorite ads anytime by placing them in your Loved section
• Tap into the More section to find additional details about the iAd Network

We’re not sure if Advertisers are paying per impression in this app (which is, again, just ads) but it would be interesting if they are. More screenies below.

Apple Cuts Minimum iAd Buy Requirement in Half

Apple has reduced the minimum iAd buy requirement from one million to five hundred thousand dollars, according to AllThingsD.

Apple confirms that the new entry point is $500,000, a significantly smaller commitment, particularly for smaller brands and agencies that are creating and producing their own iAds.

"This new minimum buy is a great step forward and a necessary one, I think," Mark Read, CEO of WPP Digital, the digital arm of global ad giant WPP, told Digital Daily. "Lowering the minimum buy to $500,000 from $1 million will certainly make the platform more appealing."

Recently some developers have complained about lower fill rates with iAds. This lower entry point for advertisers should allow Apple to get significant amount of new campaigns.

iAds Found to be Twice as Memorable as TV Ads

People who viewed one of Campbell's iAds were more than twice as likely to recall it than those who had seen on of their TV ads, according to an effectiveness study funded by Campbell's and Apple.

AdAge reports that indeed the five-week study, conducted by Nielsen, showed that consumers shown an iAd remembered the brand "Campbell's" five times more often than TV ad respondents and the ad messaging three times more often.

iAd respondents said they intended to purchase Campbell's four times more than the TV group and that they liked the ad five times more. TV and mobile audiences were queried separately in mobile and online surveys. The TV audiences were part of Nielsen's panel, while mobile users were recruited within various apps.

"We have a lot of data that goes many years back for TV print, out of home and radio, but we're searching for more validated metrics in mobile," said Ms. Gordon. "This does show, in really traditionally brand metric terms, that iAd really outperformed."

Apple Sued Twice Over User Tracking

Apple is facing two lawsuits over the collection and sharing of user data with outside companies, according to an iLounge report.

Both suits—Lalo v. Apple and Freeman v. Apple—were filed in the Northern District of California; the former was first reported by Bloomberg while the latter was spotted by Wired. Both suits appear to be heavily based on research compiled and published by the Wall Street Journal, which showed that some apps send age, gender, location, and phone identifier information to ad networks without notifying the user.

The suit, filed on behalf of Jonathan Lalo, complains that "Some apps are also selling additional information to ad networks, including users' location, age, gender, income, ethnicity, sexual orientation and political views."

The Freeman suit holds Apple responsible for approving the applications that track user data. "Defendant Apple, by exercising significant control over App developers and sharing profits with them, has created a 'community of interest' with the other Defendants to render them joint venturers, who are responsible for each other’s torts. Defendant Apple has also aided and abetted the remaining Defendants in the commission of their legal wrongs against Plaintiffs and the proposed class."

Lalo identifies offending applications such as Pandora, Paper Toss, the Weather Channel and Dictionary.com, naming them as defendants along with Apple. Freeman names Toss It, Text4Plus, The Weather Channel, Talking Tom Cat, and Pimple Popper Lite in addition to Apple.
