Why are there Apple logos in the backdrop of a Samsung store? UPDATED: Replaced with “S” icons

UPDATE [Monday, September 26, 2011 at 11:30am ET]: The Sammy Hub blog pointed out that Samsung has replaced all the wrong icons by an “S,” as seen in another image after the break.

Spotted by the folks over at CNET, an Italian Samsung store actually has Apple logos in the backdrop. You’ll noticed circled that there are App Store and Safari logos. Alright we’re just going to put this out there, Samsung — what the hell happened here? With all of the legal proceedings going underway, we’d think Samsung would try to step away from this kind-of thing.

Epic Games president suggests Apple, the accidental gaming giant, is obsoleting next-gen consoles

The argument involving mobile gaming versus dedicated consoles is heating up, with no sign of dying down. First CEO John Riccitiello praised iPad as Electronic Arts’ fastest-growing platform, then founder Trip Hawkins bashed Apple, saying the company is up for a decline on the grounds of irreplaceability of Steve Jobs, and yesterday Epic Games president Mike Capps challenged the purpose of next-generation console hardware with all the momentum and credibility Apple’s iOS gadgets have been accumulating in the gaming space. He told IndustryGamers (via CNET)

Before the problem was between the consoles and PC where they had very different levels. The power of your PC could be 100 times the power of somebody else’s PC. This time the problem could be mobile. If you look at the ridiculous acceleration of iPhone hardware and technology, trying to find a sweet spot for tech to make your mobile game… I mean, what would your mobile game look like in 2015? Who knows how fast that’s going to operate, but you can bet it’s going to be faster than an Xbox 360.
And then this about iPhone 8 (not a typo):

So I think that’s the real challenge for us now, rather than worrying about the difference between a couple consoles and some order of magnitude, whether 3X or 4X. It’s about how do we deal with iPhone 8… if you watch where the gamers are going that’s where they are. Your iPhone 8 will probably plug into your TV, or better yet, wirelessly connect to your television set to give you that big screen gaming experience with good sound. So really, what’s the point of those next-gen consoles? It’s a very interesting situation to be looking at. That’s what we’re starting to think about more… not how do we scale from some Nintendo platform to some other future console.
That major game developers and publishers are even getting drawn into the Apple versus console makers argument in the first place is a telling sign of the Cupertino, California gadget maker’s growing influence in the gaming industry. Many people think Apple should launch a dedicated gaming console. Frankly, Apple may not even need a dedicated gaming hardware. iPad 2 and iPhone 4 already have capable GPUs that will only get better when the A6 chip comes out (some say it’s in test production now). The AirPlay technology can already wirelessly beam some games from your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad to the big screen TV. And if Apple ever makes that rumored television set, they will have in place an end-to-end entertainment system, most likely cloud-based, that will be second to none. How do you rival that with a dedicated gaming hardware and decades-old business model that boils down to overpriced games distributed (mostly) exclusively on physical media? Of course Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony will introduce new consoles or refresh existing ones, but it’s hard to resist the feeling that the current model is past its peak, giving Apple a shot at becoming the accidental gaming giant.

Flurry: Android has lost developer support to iOS due to iPad 2 and Verizon iPhone

The second-generation Apple tablet and the arrival of a CDMA version of iPhone 4 on the Verizon Wireless network together worked like magic to re-new interest in the iOS platform. Despite what a few disgruntled developers may tell you, Apple’s iOS is by far and large the go-to platform for both budding and veteran mobile app developers. This is a summary of a new survey by Flurry, Steve Jobs’ favorite analytics company. The above chart shows more new projects started on iOS than on Android:

Studying the chart, it’s readily apparent that Android has lost developer support to iOS. Specifically, Android new project starts have dropped from 36% in Q1 to 28% in Q2. Overall, total Flurry iOS and Android new project starts grew from 9,100 in Q1 to 10,200 in Q2. Of note, this drop in Android developer support represents the second quarter-over-over slide, which follows a year of significant, steady growth for the Google-built OS. Over the course of 2010, Android developer support had climbed steadily each quarter, peaking at 39% in Q4 2010.

They explain Apple’s lead…

Twenty million people cannot be wrong, Flurry says, alluding to iPad sales so far. Developers are taking notice, creating over 100,000 native apps for the tablet. The Verizon iPhone, released this January, was a huge boon for Apple’s handset because it “closed the most significant vulnerability in its US distribution, and likely world-wide”, the analytics company noted. “In fact, with its lengthy exclusive distribution agreement of iPhone on AT&T, it could be argued that Apple itself gave Android the opportunity to reach critical mass on other carriers, most notably Verizon. In that time, Google, Verizon and a host of OEMs worked hard and fast to push Android devices as an alternative to AT&T’s iPhone juggernaut. With the iPhone finally launched on Verizon, the pendulum appears to have swung back more in favor of iPhone over Android development”. It should be noted that Flurry derived those numbers from mobile apps that contain their tracking codes. As such, the survey reflects usage patterns from a subset which may or may not be an accurate representative of the whole market. Flurry also found out in another report from last month that mobile users are spending more time in their apps than on the web.

Electronics Arts Acquires PopCap Games

Electronics Arts has announced an agreement to acquire PopCap Games, a leading provider of popular games for the mobile devices including: Plants vs. Zombies, Bejeweled, and Zuma.

"EA and PopCap are a compelling combination," said EA CEO John Riccitiello. "PopCap's great studio talent and powerful IP add to EA's momentum and accelerate our drive towards a $1 billion digital business. EA's global studio and publishing network will help PopCap rapidly expand their business to more digital devices, more countries, and more channels."

"We picked EA because they have recast their culture around making great digital games," said David Roberts, CEO of PopCap. "By working with EA, we'll scale our games and services to deliver more social, mobile, casual fun to an even bigger, global audience."

"PopCap has a proven financial trajectory with sustained revenue growth and double-digit operating margins," said EA CFO Eric Brown. "On a non-GAAP basis, this deal is expected to be at least ten-cents accretive in fiscal year 2013."

PopCap is one of the largest and most respected digital and social gaming companies with more than 150 million games installed and played worldwide on platforms such as Facebook, RenRen, Google, iPhone, iPad and Android. In calendar year 2010, approximately 80% of PopCap's revenue was on high growth digital platforms.

EA will pay approximately $650 million in cash and $100 million in shares of EA common stock to be issued to certain stockholders of PopCap. In addition, the PopCap sellers are entitled to additional variable cash consideration, contingent upon the achievement of certain non-GAAP earnings before interest and tax ("EBIT") performance milestones through December 2013, EA's third fiscal quarter end.

At the upper end of the earn-out, the performance targets for EBIT are approximately $343 million in total PopCap standalone EBIT generated over the two-year period through December 2013. The exact earn-out calculation is subject to adjustments. EA will also provide up to $50 million in long-term equity retention awards to PopCap employees to be granted over the next four years.

Lodsys, We’re not patent trolls, here’s why we’re entitled to royalties over in-app purchasing

You may have heard that an unknown company called Lodsys was threatening to sue small iOS developers over the use of in-app purchasing, a system-wide iOS mechanism that lets users buy additional content inside apps, using their standard iTunes credentials. This being an Apple-designed feature, a lot of folks were left scratching their head when Lodsys announced last Friday plans to take developers to court should they refuse to pay royalties.

Following a storm of criticism by many online media outlets and bloggers who said the company was acting like a patent troll, Lodsys put out a blog post. No, they’re not patent trolls and yes, they’re just trying to “get value for the assets that it owns”. Right. In a series of Q&A posts Lodsys detailed this issue. They’re entitled to claim 0.575 percent of US revenue made from in-app purchases, so says Lodsys. On annual sales of one million dollars this amounts to $5,750 a year in license costs. But wait, there’s more of that nonsense.

They apparently have licensing agreements with Apple, Microsoft and Google, but those do not extend to third-party software offered on mobile bazaars. Therefore, Lodsys is collecting royalties from independent iOS developers themselves. Furthermore, Lodsys hinted, they might ask the same from Android and Windows Phone developers. Something tells me the company is deliberately pressuring small iOS developers in an attempt to push Apple into signing an extended licensing agreement, but Lodsys says that’s not the case. Going head-to-head with Apple’s legal sharks isn’t the wisest choice, in my personal opinion. I guess Lodsys didn’t get the memo.

*thanks 9to5Mac*

If Apple doesn't fix this mess (since they are responsible for forcing in app purchases on developers) all developers should join in a suit against Apple and if not then we might see more small developers shut down similar to iFlowReader. If Apples 30% of in app purchases wasn't enough this new royalty will defiantly make iOS (at least for now) a less attractive platform for developers..

Shootout confirms: Latest iMacs are a “best buy” for Apple gamers

You may have heard of BareFeats, right? You know, the mad scientists types that agonize over clock frequencies, fill rates and hardware stats so you don’t have to. They’re out with a comprehensive gaming shootout pitting the latest iMac family against Sandy Bridge MacBook Pros and current-gen Mac Pros. They specifically focused on graphics performance in games by measuring Portal 2 frame rates at various quality settings and resolutions. Their take?

The new 2011 iMacs run latest games very well despite their mobile AMD graphics being actually slower than Nvidia’s flagship mobile chip. The 2011 iMac family is a “best buy” for gamers, the site concluded. Read on for additional explanation and another chart proving their point.

On overall, BareFeats argues, the flagship current-gen 27-inch iMac runs Portal 2 less than a third slower (28 percent) compared to the top-of-the-line six-core Mac Pro equipped with the AMD Radeon HD 5870 graphics. However, the Mac Pro system is seventy percent pricier than its iMac counterpart. This means that iMacs offer the best value/performance ration for gamers than any other Mac system. Moreover, they noted, “you don’t even need the Core i7 version of the 2011 iMac to run games well” because the 3.1GHz Core i5 iMac packs in the same AMD Radeon HD 6970 graphics as the 3.4GHz Core i7 model.

On the other hand, if you already own a Mac Pro, for a $449 (or a fraction of the cost of an iMac) you can supercharge your gaming machine.
Hit the source link for comprehensive benchmark results and more pretty charts.

Air Penguin, the latest fad that knocked Angry Birds and Tiny Wings

The game that knocked Angry Birds and Tiny Wings off of the top slots in the App Store games chart.

What is this with the App Store and bird-themed games, huh? First Angry Birds sat atop the App Store games charts, then Tiny Wings came along and now we have Air Penguing, a Gamevil-branded feather-themed time killer. It’s currently #1 paid app in the App Store games category in the US, Germany, Austria, Hungary and Russia. I just bought it and played it for like half an hour. Here are my initial impressions…

Let’s be clear, Air Penguin is no Angry Birds-killer. It won’t even keep you glued to your device longer than awesome Tiny Wings. Air Penguin clearly’s got it going on, though, but only time will tell if it has the oomph to sustain itself on the top.

The game puts you in the shoes of a cutesy penguin that you must navigate through the icy South Pole by tilting your device. There are no other controls involved other than tilting your way out of danger.

Your character jumps all the time but the ice caps beneath him melt fast so you must quickly navigate to another one and then another one and so forth.

It’s an endless jumping affair, basically. As you jump and dodge your way through Antarctica, you can collect fish to use special features. The concept is fairly addictive, I admit, game mechanics are OK and level design is challenging enough to make you want play the whole thing through the end. I played some two dozen levels and saw sharks, birds and other cartoonish characters. I also rode on turtles’s back, ice-skated my way between the holes, avoided thin ice and what not.

My biggest complain is the overall game execution which leaves a lot of room for improvement. I find laggy scrolling and overall jerkiness totally unacceptable in the 21st century dual-core realities, especially given Air Penguin is based on a scrollable old school 2D graphics. Programmers were either too lazy or used one of the cross-platform tools to deliver the native iOS code. It won’t be a deal-killer, but was annoying enough for me to make me wish Jobs never allowed non-Apple developer tools.

There are some hundred levels in the story mode that will keep you occupied, the obligatory survival mode and some 39 Game Center achievements. Air Penguin is a 99-cent download and worth your latte, in my personal opinion, especially if you have a thing for feather-like creatures. Check out the developer’s in-game video embedded below.

Portal 2 lands on the Mac via Steam

After teasing the press with a puzzle poster ahead of the official April 19 launch date, Valve Software has released their first-person action puzzler Portal 2. The game was released on the Mac and PC via digital distribution service Steam, in addition to versions for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 that are available through their respective stores. More details after the break.

The $49.99 game follows the same formula that made the original Portal so popular. You are still in a futuristic world, making your way through vast labyrinths and huge rooms that puzzle with seemingly impossible designs. You can move objects and open so-called portals between rooms by using your portal gun.

According to MacRumors, early impressions by the users of their forums are impressive and the games is said to run smoothly with maxed out details (except antialiasing) on a 2011 15″-inch MacBook Pro with the AMD 6750 graphics.

Angry Birds Sync coming before summer

Angry Birds artwork by ijul

Does it bother you that you cannot continue playing a game on your iPad right where you left off on an iPhone? It always frustrated me that Game Center, Apple’s social network for games, only keeps record of your achievements and leaderboards but not other game data pertaining to your progress and current state of the game.

Unfortunately, until a system-wide sync of app data across all iOS devices via cloud iTunes takes off – if ever – it’s just a pipe dream. Well, not for Angry Birds developer Rovio Mobile. These guys are aware enough of the issue to come up with a solution of their own. They call it Angry Birds Sync and it’s coming soon to a platform near you…

The Appera pointed at a Rovio tweet confirming they’re “working hard” on the sync feature. It should be ready “before summer” and it’ll keep all Angry Birds devices in sync. Possibly even across platforms like Windows, Macs and iOS gadgets. Eat that, Apple!

Rovio also promised an “amazing” Easter-themed update to Angry Birds Seasons with 15 new levels for iPhone and iPad gamers. They posted a screenshot of the upcoming release, included below, and confirmed via their Twitter channel that the upcoming Angry Birds for Facebook app will include three Easter levels.

Federal jury probing Apple and Google over smartphone apps

Uh-oh, looks like federal grand jury is probing both Apple and Google over certain popular smartphone applications. According to The Wall Street Journal, both companies were asked to provide basic data about certain third-party apps found on both the App Store and Android Market:

Apple Inc. and Google Inc., which oversee digital “stores” that offer mobile applications to users of iPhones, iPads and mobile-devices powered by Google’s Android software, have been asked to provide information about the applications and app makers, the person familiar with the matter said.
Federal prosecutors are reportedly sniffing because they heard certain apps don’t play by the rules and illegally obtain personal information without users’ consent, which is a a federal computer-fraud law. Market Watch first broke the news earlier today that online music service Pandora has been served a subpoena to produce documents, but the prosecutors informed them they were not a target of the investigation:

In early 2011, we were served with a subpoena to produce documents in connection with a federal grand jury, which we believe was convened to investigate the information sharing processes of certain popular applications that run on the Apple and Android mobile platforms. We believe that similar subpoenas were issued on an industry-wide basis to the publishers of numerous other smartphone applications.

What it takes to become a millionaire with an AppStore App

Written by Ghazy (A New member to the Limerain team)

By now anybody that have used and iPhone, iPod or iPad knows that app developers are making thousands of dollars. of Course not every app developer is a millionaire, but since the opening of app store in 2001 it made iPhone apps the new Gold rush.
Of course now with the millions of apps in the app store it has become allot harder to make it through and it's not getting any easier, but don't let it discourage you because our friends at www.instantshift.com made a nice illustrative infographe to show you how to become a millionaire in 581,395 downloads only!

instantshift.com reports:

Apps can save lives. Some make our lives easier, while others offer a cheap laugh. They help us get through boring meetings, providing us with more entertaining and stimulating tasks like slicing fruit, knocking over bird houses and transforming photos into artsy masterpieces. Without apps, how else could you see how you’d look 50 pounds heavier? Or in 30 years? Or as a zombie?
Yet the real life-changing stories involving apps come from the developers who birth them. The most popular apps go viral, selling like hotcakes and bringing in the bacon with no additional effort by their creators.
Whether you’re an app consumer or producer, here are some interesting stats about these hot little digital commodities.

Easter-themed Doodle Jump movie tie-in game hits the App Store

The Pusetic brothers, the brains behind the stupendously addictive platform jumper Doodle Jump that has amassed ten million paid downloads, have just released a brand new game that introduces an interesting twist to the original formula. It’s called Doodle Jump: Hop the Movie and is available free for the iPhone and iPad.

As the name suggests, it’s a movie tie-in with Universal Pictures’ upcoming live action/CG comedy entitled HopT (trailer below). The game has you train the Easter Bunny’s son in jumping across 25 levels set in a candy factory by racing against the familiar Doodle the Doodler character.

The game boasts the same tap to shoot and tilt to steer simplicity found in its predecessor, with all the right ingredients like moving, disappearing, exploding and breakable platforms. Doodle Jump: Hop the Movie comes with eight levels unlocked, but the remaining levels unlock one level each day in the run-up to the movie’s release on April 1.

It’s a Doodle Jump and it’s free so grab it now, especially if you’ve been wondering why spend a buck for the original Doodle Jump game.

All Aboard Lola's Alphabet Train 2.0

BeiZ announces the launch of its engaging educational game for children, Lola's Alphabet Train, available for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. Children can join Lola Panda while she teaches youngsters how to read, spell new words and identify various objects in five enchanting alphabet games. Children start with a "drag and drop" letter game and advance through progressively challenging stages, like "form a word", as their linguistics skills improve. Offering three difficulty levels for children ages 3-8, Lola's Alphabet Train can grow with young children as their vocabulary and verbal skills expand.

Taking lessons from proven entertaining game-play mechanics, Lola's Alphabet Train facilitates learning in children through a compelling rewards system that allows children to choose from a bountiful collection of prizes as they complete each level. The reward system in Lola's Alphabet Train enhances a notion of motivation called "choice of challenge," occurring when children experience success and satisfaction in overcoming one challenge and then welcoming another. By applying fun and engaging gaming elements to education, parents will soon see tots picking up Lola's Alphabet Train to have a great time and essentially learn all on their own.

At an age when children are hungry to learn and retain new information, Lola's Alphabet Train provides a learning tool that stimulates curiosity, exploration and discovery. Parents will see toddlers gleam with feelings of accomplishment as they triumph over each challenge with Lola Panda, with increasing confidence and self-esteem. Lola's Alphabet Train is an engaging platform for children to learn on their own as the improved game logic in the app helps bolster retention of newly learned material. As an added bonus, Lola's Alphabet Train also includes four foreign languages for children to experience and wrap their minds around.

"Lola's Alphabet Train is a wonderful learning tool for young children, as it has been designed to enhance and refine cognitive abilities," says Mika Heikinheimo, CEO of BeiZ. "By fusing certain game-play elements with learning, it can ignite interest and engagement amongst young children, making the learning experience a lot more appealing than it would be otherwise."

Plants vs. Zombies is Now Available in the Mac App Store

Plants vs. Zombies, a hugely popular game for iOS devices, is now available in the Mac App Store.

Get ready to soil your plants in an all-new action-strategy game from PopCap! A mob of fun-loving zombies is about to invade your home, and your only defense is an arsenal of 49 zombie-zapping plants. Use peashooters, wall-nuts, cherry bombs and more to slow down, confuse, weaken and mulchify 26 types of zombies before they can reach your front door. Each zombie has its own special skills, so you’ll need to think fast and plant faster to combat them all. But be careful how you use your limited supply of greens and seeds: as you battle the fun-dead, obstacles like a setting sun, creeping fog and a swimming pool add to the challenge. And with five game modes to dig into, the fun never dies!

You can purchase Plants vs. Zombies for $9.99 from the Mac App Store.
